Help! I am a total newbie to Linux, and am trying to get my new votexbox pc to be able to play flac files stored on its internal hard drive via a usb connection to my Lynx Hilo dac. I have a bunch of music stored and searchable via the lms software, but when I click play, nothing happens. I have gone into the configure players tab and made a few attempts to configure a player to no effect.:
I am assuming that the name has to be a command-line like reference to the connection I want to use, but am at a loss for the syntax required... here is a cut and paste from the screen: what do i type into the name field, and how do i get the lms to recognize the player so-named? Or, am I approaching this from the wrong perspective?
thanks for any help The M2tech is plugged in , but is no longer being recognized by the vortexbox pc.

Follow Ups:
terminal
type
"asoundconf list"
then get the name of your usb device from the output, then type in terminal
"asoundconf set-default-card name"
might be as simple as typing
"asoundconf set-default-card Hilo"
good luck!
I thought you went for the easy solution. :-}}

Go figure, huh?! I did finally figure it out. The name field was just a name to identify things. I ended up having to download a terminal emulator extension for chrome on my laptop, and activate a driver on the vortexbox. Once I did that, I was able to get the the Squeeze software to "see" the virtual players and play correctly.
Of course the duh moment came when I finally realized that the shiny new, non-returnable Lynx Hilo dac is not Linux compatible.... (something to do with the mastering/mixing funcionality and the 16/32 channel functionality built into it). I confirmed the incompatibility by getting sound out of my Centrance Dacmini. So, not to be outdone, I am using my Hifiace 2 USB-s/pdif converter to good effect.
I also bought an Almond Wi-Fi router to use as an access point, and cannot get it to provide connectivity to my vortexbox, so I am actually using the Sonos as my access point....
simple is as simple does (then there's me) :)
It sounds very good, so it was worthwhile.
Glad that you got it worked out.

What are you going to do with the Hilo?

gonna keep it - it sounds really good. I pressed an M2tech Hiface into service, and all is well. I could try to dual boot on the little box I bought, and try windows plus jriver, but I think that would be a real PITA to get running.... I am not even sure what exact hardware is in this little microbox I bought from small green computers, other than I got the 1 Tb version....
If I decide to sell the Hilo, I will let you know.
The Lynx manual says you can use it on OSX 10.6.4 and above without installing drivers.
Makes me think it is a UAC2 compliant device.
UAC2 is supported by Linux as well.
The Well Tempered Computer
I think it one of the devices which breaks the rule of thumb that driver-less OSX support means it will work in Linux as well. It has something to do with the Hilo being a "mastering" device, and it allows up to 16 channels of input via usb...... in any case, I get no sound when it's connected, and I do with my Centrance dacmini, and when i use the hiface2 converter.....
thanks for taking the time to answer, though.
