Yes, If I didn't have my IVas, I would still be quite happy with the IDs.
The more time I spend listening to them, the more I am amazed at their sound - the simple 2 way, 1st order design is perfect for these speakers.
Without the socks they look atrocious...for being over 30 years old...

Yes, there is something right about the 1D's overall sound, just can't put my finger on it. These old Tymps have withstood the test of time. The favorites remain 1D and IVa.
I am beging to think that the Tympani WERE the Best speaker ever made by AR...then Magnepan.... I know that worket togather..An there NOt Sold today...An thay were to BIG!......Hehe
The one reasion I see is....thay can be setup in a Arck..Flat mylar faceing speakers Like new Magnepans, ESL. an others....well never be forgiving a neff...to live with for most...A lot of people dont like Maggy sound...Not talking about people HERE!... but with the mylar facing you ...you can see right off if Maggys are for you...
The older one panel mAggys were a lot of fun...An way more forgiving...An with most of the sound come from the back gave more of the Arck sound... but when Magnepan put the Mylar in the front that lost A type of Openes that minny people liket...Me for one...hehe
The only reson that the Mylars was put in the front... that i can come up with is it was ezer to sale...Sounds more like other box type speakers ... An most people only set a play the speakers for about 60-90 min ...Most people have a life.....not people like us that can have the sound on all day...
An do mods an have other speakers...Well most have more that one pr...other have one pr that was stock at one time but have done so much to...what thay say thay think is better are right....well no one can no...less thay could hear there setup...
Thay cant Buy it... an most even if thay said it was better well never do the MODs! Hehehe....................good luck
Yep, I've always felt that way about the 1-D's and so has everyone I ever played them for. As you point out they can't match the IVa's in the highs or deep bass, and they have some lateral imaging problems in a small room since the woofer and tweeter are so far apart, but they have their own virtues including seamlessness since all the drivers use the same technology and a single pole crossover. Also, I think they have great musicality to them, that sort of magical quality that can't quite be bottled in a specification but that everyone knows when they hear it.
I think they're a great bargain for those who have more space than money, and are willing to do a somewhat intricate repair if the tweeters are bad -- though for some reason, the 1-D's seem to be holding up very well, mine never had to be rebuilt. At some point, I put new socks on them.
