Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
50.93.37.139
Currently looking at a 20 year old pair of 2.6's that have a tweeter ribbon kit as an extra. Owner advise he has checked the panels and there appears to be no delamination issues. He has covers for them but I don't know how long they have been covered up when not in use over the 20 years (original owner).
Any ideas as to what Magnepan charges to refurb a pair of 2.6 panels?
Would like to have a pair of spare maggies and therse would get me into a ribbon model with better WAF than a used pair of 3.6's....

thanks for the inputs guys - will give them a shout this week.
As the seller has a new ribbon kit (apparently good for 2-3 ribbons) I will assume that Magnepan will only have to work on the panels when they'll need it and as the speakers are 20 years old I think its safe to assume it will be sooner rather than later. Have to factor in freight from Canada to MN (expensive) before I make an offer
People say that the DIY ribbon replacement is painstaking, but doable. I think most people do the tweeter swap instead. But keep in mind that there's no lifetime limit on the ribbons -- according to Magnepan, they'll last indefinitely when levels are moderate (typical I think of the levels people report here). If you push them, they'll eventually suffer metal fatigue and have to be replaced, but if you don't see any sagging or other problems in yours they could last quite a while.
Magnepan also offers a rebuild kit for the woofers. It's only $40 or something so quite a savings and it also seems to be quite doable if you have some soldering skills, but somewhat time consuming -- remove the socks, strip off the old adhesive and wire with acetone, put the new wires on, etc. And it assumes the Mylar is still OK.
it is not easy and the kit is only for folks that can't stand the shipping charge of sending the tweeters both ways. The enough to do three is because you will probably mess up the first one. I'd probably try it but...
And for that shipping from Canada, I'm sure Magnepan knows the least expensive way and can make recommendations. They are good like that.
Magnepan spits out prices for rebuilds all day long. They are not shy about it, so give em a call. They do give a range because the ribbons may or may not need replacing (200 buck range) and there may or may not be any Mylar repairs needed.
What is it with everyone needing boxes for these? I have bought 4 pairs of Magnepans over the years and 2 tonearms and got boxes with 5 of these items. One tonearm, already mounted did not have a box.
I guess I'm bragging about buying three used sets and getting boxes. I am surprised by that for sure. Not looking at the financial value but the ability to ship the speakers is the big thing for me.
I think you can sometimes get a better deal on the ones without boxes, the guy will say "local pickup only." Of course, you should factor the cost of new boxes into the selling price, since you may have to sell them or ship them back to the factory. But once you do that the deal could be attractive.
I agree with TYU on this one. Don't be shy about calling Magnepan. Their service department is very good and reasonably priced as well. I paid about $800 for a complete rebuild (pannels & ribbons) of a pair of 2.6's but I don't remember if that included shipping. I would guess that they will be hesitant to quote a price without looking at them. Perhaps they will need very little in the way of refurbing if there isn't any delamination. Not sure what they will recommend in that case.
