I thought it was time to share some pics of my new Acoustat Frames.
I didn't want to show any pics until they were 100% finished, but it looks like that could be a while.
Sorry for the poor pics, I had much better pics, but my other camera seems to have got lost in the move somewhere.
Still some sanding to do and then I plan on doing about 3-4 coats of wet sanding with Tung oil, then I can put the grills on.
These were Org. Acoustat X with tube servo amps. The org. panels were angled, which is great for bigger rooms, but most of my listens is in nearfield.
So I took out the inner frames from my X frames and I cut them and rejoined them so that were now flat panels.
Then onto the main frames. I used 3/4" Birdseye Maple for the top layer, then 3/4" of Murtle wood for the next layer and 3/4" Maple for the back, for a sold piece of beauty at just over 2" after finished.
They are about 58" tall.
Then came the base, this is 2" thick Maple at 23" x 33" , I was going to put an inner layer of Murtle wood in this, but someone in the shop misplaced my Murtle wood. So I used all Maple for the base with a 3/4" layer of Birdseye on top.
The wooden struts you see on the back are Rosewood that someone left in our shop along time ago. So I made full use of them. The base and the struts are detachable.
I have made a few projects with woodwork and really love working with wood. I'm very pleased with how things worked out.
The inner frame is just attached with a few screws right now, but I did make some nice Maple L-brackets 3" wide for that task.
We'll get to the sound after! :O) :O)
I have had my system in storage most of the past 1 1/2 years.
But I did manage to get it setup for about 3 months this past summer.
That was just enough time for me to get my long overdue New Frame project started.
I just moved from Vancouver Canada to Calgary and I didn't want to get overwhelmed by the Tung oil on the 1000 km trip, so I didn't put a finish on them yet. Back into storage they have went and I'm not sure when I will get them setup again.
But it sure was a fun project and well worth the time I put into it.
Looking forward to the day I set them up again, right now, I'm going through withdrawal, I'm miss my Babies!!
I havn't been posting much for a while, it sure sucks, not to have my system setup.
:O( :O(

I see there is some 2+2 on that site at a good starting bid.

Out of All i think the M3...Or what i have 3-9" panels pr Side...I think this is the best match for the 121 interfaces.....
The X& M3 have 2ea9" an one 8"...The M4s Has 2ea 9"2ea 8"....i Like the Sound of the 9" panels best....

After over 30years not miny ESLs can beat them......Xs 3 panels ea...... Big Bass.... good 30hz only the Apogee Duettas gave as good In room Bass .....
One of the Best MODs i have done to my panels was to pull the Felt off the back an put tape...give better topend without any lose of bass output....
LongLiveAcoustats......goodluck
Hey thanks for the thumps up.
Did you use Duct tape on the back.
Sounds like a good tweak to try, always looking to get a Little more.
Nice amp in your pic. :O)
Gofig....The duct tape rolled down the topend in a diff way ...not as much as the felt...You may like it...?
In the End the best all round tape was paper...2" wide panters tape... One peace right in the middel...3" from top&bottem...
Your cool hardwood may let you take all off...No tape are Felt
This same tape work on ribbon ...Not on the foil of the ribbon it self... but the metel frame....Dampens an has best topend sound....well to me...try what you well....you can take it off... goodluck
Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I will have to try that when I get my system back up.
I do have Maggie ribbons I use as super tweeters, so I will try that as well.
Thanks :O)
I have a pr of old MG3a i have the ribbons out aswell...if you are going to run the ribbons with you Acoustats...An wont to get big bass....
The felt pades my be just right for passivly rolling off the topend of the panels...to match up with the ribbons...
So miney way to go... have fun...this is a great hobby..when you have all the toyes to play with...goodluck
