"I'd guess that the new ones use the new caps and a series crossover. "
That'd mean PG was right!

In a sense, it would.
Wasn't the ORIGINAL MMG crossover a series design?
Weren't some other Maggies stock with a series crossover?
Too much is never enough
One of the reasons I said "in a sense." Not in the original MMG, but they had used it. There are various advantages and disadvantages to a series crossover, so I don't think you can say "series crossovers are better" or "series crossovers are worse." It really depends on what you're doing.
Yeah, I made no judgement on better / worse.
I'd imagine that as is usual....you make choices.....each of which has an upside and a downside.
Sometimes the downsides seem so trivial that the upside seems a 'miracle'.
Too much is never enough
In the case of crossovers, it can also be determined by other technical factors. For example, series crossovers have pretty much lost any advantage once you go beyond a single pole. So if you're speaker design can't work optimally with single pole crossovers (most can't), a series crossover isn't going to buy you much. Also, if you use a Zoebel network, a series crossover is probably going to sound the same as a parallel crossover. Etc. Lots of considerations.
