Sapele wood. I am very happy with how they turned out.

VERY nice! Man, I'm REALLY gettin' the itch to start on the frames for my MG2.5's and Spring's just around the corner..
What fabric are you using to cover the panels with? Is that a "sandwich" style of construction? It looks like you have wood trim holding the driver panels in place there.
I love how so many take just a slightly different path and end up with a beautiful result.
I actually screwed the drivers into the frame first. The two vertical supports are there to hold the horizontal back brace and stiffen the frame. The fabric is actually from the original frames. I bought some new fabric from Magnepan, but I didn't like it as much. I washed the old stuff and it came out great. The old has a sheen in the light, not so with the new.

Beautiful work! I really like your beveled ribbon frames. They look like the perfect solution in getting the wood out of the way. I ended up putting a bit of wool felt around the edges on mine but I like your solution better. Were you able to keep the ribbons within the stock distance to the midrange driver’s? That was a struggle when I did my 2.5R’s. I also have separate frames for my ribbons and found that toeing the ribbons in a bit really made a difference in presentation. If possible, you may what to give it a try.

Very nice job, let us know how they sound.
The ribbons are supported by a cross brace at the bottom and top. The finish is danish oil. The trick is to flood the surface with the oil and wet sand it with fine sandpaper. The process makes a paste out of the oil and wood dust. The paste gets worked into the pores of the wood, and makes a very smooth glasslike surface. Just be careful with subsequent coats. Once you seal the wood by sanding, too much oil will just sit on the surface and never dry.
Thanks for your finishing tip with oil + wet sanding.
I'll have to try that.
Nice job!!
I dont know how you got that finish but that just looks awesome. I wish mine looked that good.

That is really nice. Impressive, even.
In search of musical bliss...
How have you organised the ribbon-frame to stand upright, John?

They look great! I built my own frames out of rock maple, and it is a lot of work. But worth it. Enjoy your new speakers.

I like that tripod mounting, minimal base look.

Wow, that's excellent!
Great job. Is the ribbon housing hinged to the housing of the other driver? How do they sound in this new configuration? Did you do the work yourself? How long did it take? Congrats.
Illegitimus non carborundum.
I did the work myself. I did not hinge the tweeter, it's solidly mounted. I started the project 2nd week in Jan. Evenings and weekends. I could have done it quicker, but I kept having to relight my cigar and open another beer. The process was better than therapy, and the end product was worth it. I will report on the sound in a while. I really need to listen some first. I will say that they do seem tighter and more articulate. I purposely reused the crossovers to evaluate on mod at a time.
"I purposely reused the crossovers to evaluate on mod at a time." Perfect; I'm sure lots of folks would like to have a first hand appraisal of the improvement in sound quality from just a hardwood frame mod. Keep on truckin' C!

Outstanding!!
I wish mine looked (and probably sound) like those.
GREAT work.
They look Marvelous!
