I don't know. It's not necessarily a fallacy since it seems to be accepted wisdom, but I haven't found it to be the case. At least not with adequately powered 1.6s.
Certainly I can accept that the effects are there, under conditions that I haven't yet heard.
I didn’t realize “accepted wisdom” had anointed Maggies on lower levels as such – you don’t seem to have experienced this wisdom – nor have I – in my space unacceptable sound at low levels is a myth - IMO of course.

With my relatively high ambient level (of backgound noise) here, running the speakers at 75db, that ain't exactly idling for 1.6s. So I'd accept that if my ambient were significantly lower and I ran the speakers at 20db up, it's easily possible that the presentation would change.
I just haven't seen it, though. I haven't got enough data to draw a conclusion nor can I test it in my present environment.
So I can't call BS on the drab issue. All I can say is I haven't experienced it. That doesn't mean it isn't real, though.
