Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
70.236.36.82
Bob Carver is at it again, producing some monster tube amps. And with all the discussion about tubes and SS, I figured I would throw this one out there. 362W at 1ohm is just stupid silly for a tube amp. Wish I had the funds to buy it.

An earlier Carver Effort: and still one of the Greats:
Too much is never enough
Sorry to be a damper, but while the scintilla is a wacky, low impedance load, what are the phase angles doing?
Don't know if it is inductive or capacitive reactance, but tubes / transformers simply do not like one of 'em......no matter how much power.
Too much is never enough
Well, like most ribbon speakers it is mostly resistive in nature. The crossover will add some reactance but it is of a low order design so that won't be too severe.
I have heard the Scintillas driven just fine in a large room with the Vacuumstate monoblocks that are SPECIFICALLY designed to drive 1 ohm loads. They put out 150 watts into 1 ohm and this is enough to drive the speaker to more than satisfactory levels.
I suspect the old Melos monoblocks could also drive them. Theey were rated at 400 watts triode(they were actually more powerful) and I think they had a 2 ohm tap and a low output impedance for a tube amp.
Greg:
Those amps do look incredible. The only decent tube amp I ever got to use was on my new 1.6's, about 2000/2001. It was the 'reborn' (modern) Mac MC275. I think it was about 5~6 years old when I got it. They made a really nice music together. I'd love to hear what these babies in this auction could do!
Bob Carver loves the Apogee Scintilla....he is a long time owner of a pair.
It was developed Specifically to drive Scintillas and makes about 150 watts into 1 ohm.
I have heard this amp strapped to Scinnies and the sound was excellent with plenty of umph.
"This amplifier has been designed with big Apogees in mind, the one ohm kind. It delivers 362 watts into my one ohm Apogee Scintilla"
Quoted directly from the auction, 362 watts into 1 ohm

I am not talking about the amp in the auction.

The last set he sold in June sold for $5655.55. I would expect this set to sell for about the same or a little more.

Here is a link to the carver forums discussing this amp and the sale.
sorry $7700 on 7/29/10.
WOW!! :-))

Andy
"Wow". Both of them are too old to accurately hear what they are making/selling.
NormanM: RE: Wow! They are too old to hear... Are you speaking from experience? :-)
.
"Wow" that is an unfair age discrimination statement
So it goes.........
