It isn't really a non-segmented full range, though. Rather it's a 2-1/2 way line source system in which amplifier damping keeps the frequency ranges where they should be, in the woofer, tweeter plus supertweeter, and supertweeter respectively.
Follow Ups:
I didn't realize it was a multi-way loudspeaker. Hasn't it been advertised (or at least described in the press) as a "full range ribbon?"
If it is a multi-way planar magnetic, what distinguishes it from the rest of the quasi-ribbon Magnepan speakers?
The earlier Maggie quasi ribbon models have quasi ribbon (aluminum ribbons on mylar) tweeters and planar magnetic (wire on mylar) bass. Or sometimes true ribbon tweeters, quasi ribbon midrange, and planar magnetic bass. Whereas the 1.7's are the first Magnepan that uses quasi ribbon technology in every frequency range -- woofer, tweeter, and supertweeter.
They really should be called full range quasi ribbons, to distinguish them from the true ribbons (aluminum conductor with no mylar backing) as in the tweeters of the 3.6 and 20.1, but I guess the distinction is too unwieldly so it tends to get left out.
Thanks for the explanation.
