Good reply all.
The question of interfacing to a computer remains, but the gap closes.
Any SOFTWARE available for cheap?
The 2 axis from Radio Shackup is good...especially for the money. I expect QC on 'em is only OK and repeatability from unit to unit only so-so, but to build a working vibration sensor for experiments, this'll work.
Also, as an aside, there ARE accelerometer apps available for the Iphone / Touch series. They seem to be aimed at the automotive user, rather than scientific / research type stuff.
