The real thing and the multichannel too. Keith really likes his Cary 5 that has HT bypass.
You just need to figure out how to wire your sources into the preamp and your HT processor if you have shared video and high quality audio devices like a universal player or a multimedia PC. This allows you to keep the HT processing functions when in bypass mode.

Albeit not with the Cary, it didn't keep me happy. Currently, my primary source is a Denon 3930 with The Upgrade Company mods - very sweet sounding source with all media types, but no BluRay. I added a BluRay player, but I'd prefer to consolidate (again) - I'm just not looking forward to schlepping another expensive player off for a series of expensive upgrades only to see a new technology arise that pushes that player into obselescence. :-(
The MAP1 (especially in SMc modded form) is ideal in that it doesn't force analog sources back through a conversion to digital and then analog - it's just a multichannel analog preamp. It's only shortcoming is that it lacks the balanced outputs that the Pass amp designs seem to prefer.

Consider a DAC and an pre with HT bypass.
The idea is that you can switch digital inputs to your pre (via DAC) while feeding your HT processor with whatever it takes for input. If you are particularly enamored of a particular source in analog, use a Y splitter to provide parallel outputs. If necessary to adjust for impedances for a tube source, build a Y splitter yourself with a 100 K series + parallel resistor on each leg of the Y. Note that there will be some insertion loss (3 db) so this is not viable for low gain systems.
I am surprised that someone as deeply skeptical of balanced circuitry as Pass would provide an advantage to balanced inputs - outside of what is normally the 6db gain on them. If its an issue, look to Lundahl's trannies:

There are a great number of obsolete HT processors lacking HDMI switching and even component outputs. These often have great DACs and preamp sections. Since the digital processing is defeatable, you can have a very good preamp and DAC and leave the video and HT functions at your newer HT controller.
There is the Accurus Stage 1 and offerings from Classe, Mark Levinson, Proceed, SimAudio, and Ayre, Typically these go for 20-25% of original retail, a few go for even less.
thats the way to go.. but I absolutely understand where you are coming from..altering you system when it is good in order to search out great can be really frustrating..if you can imagine what you brain goes through...
