And you went ahead and bought them? Hmmm......

Follow Ups:
Heard my first pair of Maggies (of all places) in a Mom and Pop video rental store! The owner was kind of a 'fixer upper' of dept store audio gear; a 'gadget' kinda guy I guess you can say. Anyway he had a pair of SMGa's sitting right thar on the floor in front of his display case. After a few visits I finally asked him to hook em' up, needless to say I asked him to turn em' off quickly there after!
Fast forward to another place and time, I then heard a set of 3.3's 'properly set up' at a local dealer's and this time my reaction was along the lines of speechless'ness (new word I just invented).
I could've (and probably should've) had those for the same price as a new pair of 1.6's but got the 1.6's instead. The rest of this journey has been pure nirvana to say the least.
I sold the 1.6's during my divorce; my next 'go-round' will undoubtably be Maggies (a PG original hopefully); just haven't decided which flavor.

Yep. Dreamed about owning a pair since I was 15. I got in this relationship and intend and staying faithful. It has everything to do with the adventure, satisfaction, and sacrifice, that was made to achieve something great one day. Don't act shocked, every audiophile plays this silly game...
You forgot to add an amp recommendation :P
I've been in this game for forty years and yours is the first story I've heard of someone not liking what they heard and buying them anyway. For amps, I would suggest the McCormack DNA-1, the OCM-500, the Muse 150s or the Belles 150 Hot Rod. None are any longer manufactured but all are excellent and will drive the 1.7s well. That being said, I suspect you are in for frustration. Planars don't do it for every listener. Good luck.

They are all good, but the DNA-125 is a real sweetheart, puts our a real 200 watts into 4 ohms and there are two on Audiogon right now for your budget. If you don't like it, you can easily get your money back.
DNA-1....... Plenty of power, 370 into 4 ohms. (Many sites have the power ratings of these amps wrong. They were 185W into 8ohms, not 150 as commonly thought. They double their power into 4ohms. Check out the Stereophile reviews/bench tests for confirmation.)
These are a great buy for around $800 on the used market and they can still be serviced/upgraded by Steve McCormack. Very warm sounding for a solid state amp, and I've been a tube guy for over 15 years.
I'd go for one of these, which I recently did, as opposed to a used Aragon.
If the MAP-1 is any indication, McCormack's products are outstanding performers and values. Admittedly, my MAP-1 is the SMc (modded) variety, but it's the best multichannel preamp I've (n)ever heard.

Try a oddysey Khartego. I have used them with my 1.6's and they are all you would want in an amp. More than enough power
