"Yes, wombats do indeed poop in cubes, a unique characteristic among animals. This phenomenon has been the subject of scientific study, revealing that wombats produce cube-shaped feces due to the structure and elasticity of their intestines."Mechanism Behind Cube-Shaped Feces
"Wombats have intestines that are approximately 33 feet long, which is ten times their body length. As the feces travel through the intestines, they undergo a process where they transition from a liquid to a solid state. The last portion of the intestines has regions with varying elasticity, which play a crucial role in shaping the feces into cubes. Specifically, two elastic grooves in the intestinal walls help form the distinct cube shape just before the feces exit the body."Purpose of Cube-Shaped Feces
"The cube shape serves a practical purpose. Wombats often defecate on elevated surfaces like rocks and logs to mark their territory. The flat sides of the cubes prevent them from rolling away, ensuring that the markings remain in place and are effective for communication with other wombats. They can produce up to 100 cubes a day, which they strategically place around their territory. This unique adaptation not only aids in territory marking but also provides insights into the digestive processes of wombats, which could have implications for understanding similar processes in other species, including humans."

Will never happen as I'm already a bit scared of the black bears here in California. Going to bring bear spray my next trip as they are getting too familiar with humans already.
I hope CA has a black bear hunting season to control the bear population and confirm and Instill fear of humans in the bears. Otherwise? Well, time will tell.
