A few people in this forum have argued against the arrest of Pavel Durov. Like he was some kind of hero or stood for principles of 'freedom of speech'.

Comrade Chris? Emailtim? Are you still both champions of Durov and Telegram? Make your best argument!

My take? Telegram's claim to be a model for free speech is disingenuous, because it has become a haven for illegal activities, extremism, and disinformation. Telegram selectively enforces moderation policies, prioritizing its founder's anti-regulation ideology over legal and ethical responsibilities.

Downloadable dark web apps have been around since the dark web.
Durov getting arrested for malcontents misusing a comms app is analogous to Rod getting arrested for Tweaker PM'ing you picts of his (Tweaker's) mangina.

  . . . politicians like Macron (or our US Senate and Congress for that matter) don't even have the most basic understanding of how the WWW works. (Remember when Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska claimed in a speech that "The Internet is a series of tubes!"?) Of course, we know better today: the Internet is actually a Cloud! LOL!

    Heh, did not hear about the "series of tubes", but did recently see KH's word salad trying to describe the cloud, complete with flailing hand gestures trying to push up an imaginary sunken headliner.
    First time I heard about "cloud storage" from my neighbor, I had an immediate knee jerk reaction. Cloud services are as secure as its most disgruntled employee and my gut reaction was proved right over and over again including the PRK doxxing its own citizens (entire state database download with single mouse click) straight to the dark web.
    I wrote an asset management system for police and military (evidence lockups, weapons lockups, etc.). It had layers of security built in including layered snooping so managers could monitor their employees and site administrators could monitor the managers. I never published that I had additional layers of security where I (i.e. OEM factory) could monitor all users including the site administrators. I made no assumptions that the police and military administrators were legitimate.
    I think the problem exists in many, many forms. You have law abiding citizens properly using (or not using) goods and services and then outside forces (including competing criminals) try to game/reduce the system to the lowest POS misusing the system. Race to the bottom.
    Example: Drunk driving laws, DUI stops, etc. are used for unlawful search a seizures of people who don't drink nor ever have.
    Example: Phone monitoring with illegal FISA warrants, then spying on phone users in the periphery (outside of the scope of the illegally obtained warrants).
    I am all for policing the criminals, but we have seen it goes well beyond its boundaries.

Durov was famous for his refusal to cooperate with law enforcement. It's one thing to claim, "I can't help what people use the platform for." It's another thing entirely to enable criminals. Durov is an accessory after the fact of any crime committed via Telegram.

  You are confusing criminal perps with the medium they employ to commit their crimes. Durov is the owner of the medium, not the "accessory after the fact". The US Mail "enables" criminals too, just like Telegram.

    Commit crime via the US Mail, the Postal Service helps the cops catch the perps.
    Durov helped the perps evade justice. That makes him an accessory.
    And it's likely the real reason why he was indicted. The cops want info about crimes committed with Telegram as the enabler, Durov refuses to play.
    I hope he rots in prison.

      . . . especially if what they want will undermine the integrity of his product. Remember when Apple wouldn't give the encryption key for some of their products to the FBI? I don't recall your wishing that Apple execs would rot in prison for that. If I didn't know better, I might even conclude that this reflects a bit of hypocrisy on your part.

      The FCC and the US Goobermint doesn't do shit.
