I wonder if that secret trip to China didn't have more to do with lining up a buyer than it did with self-driving.

Also, China is much bigger into EVs than the US is. They're smarter about them, too.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Having buyer subsidies like we do isn't as powerful as backing up mfrs loosing money for 10 years or so until they corner a market and competition has gone under. Or at least that's what worked in other areas.
"Product dumping".

... It's about Chinese shared vehicle boondoggles and the author promoting wallets.

You don't understand Chinese policies that go far beyond electric vehicles.
They do the same thing with Ghost Cities as well.
However personal and off-topic it may be.

It is evident in many ways with EVs being only one.
So, are you aware of their massive, multi-billion dollar ghost cities where no one lives?
Click here and sample your choice of videos detailing this version of their inept policies.
There are many different manufacturers building and selling EVs in China, including GM.
And Tesla. And Ford. The list goes on and on.
FWIW, I don't agree with EV subsidies either but if you think ICE vehicles aren't also subsidized, you're kidding yourself.

Current gasoline & diesel prices do not include the true cost of burning those fuels to the environment. Economists call that a "negative externality" ... a real cost not included in the normal market price.
With stiff fossil fuel taxes EVs would suddenly look a lot better even without vehicle subsidies.

It was the industry, via AAA, that pushed for laws making jaywalking ticketable.
The industry also developed school curricula to teach kids that the roads belonged to cars, even though public roads belong to everybody including pedestrians and cyclists.
After the second world war, the country was reordered around the automobile via fierce lobbying by the industry. GM and a couple of other interested parties were allowed buy up and dismantle commuter interurban rail systems. The result is a country where every working age adult needs a car, regardless of whatever public transportation options are available.
President Eisenhower was enamored by Germany's Autobahn, the auto industry took advantage. Now we have interstates that don't ease congestion, have wiped out entire ecosystems, divided and demolished communities. And we can't afford to maintain them.
We also subsidize oil exploration and extraction, which, as you said, keeps gasoline prices artificially low.
Government policy also encourages people to buy gas guzzlers, which is totally illogical. Pickup trucks are protected by a 25% tariff and aren't subject to the gas guzzler tax.
Despite the post from the resident know it all farther up the thread, EV sales aren't tanking. They're actually increasing, just not as fast as expected.
But is that surprise? How much of a market is there for some ridiculous cartoon like the Hummer EV? Tesla's sales are tanking because Elon Musk has made Tesla uncool.

Great post. It was hard not to take the bait from "the resident know it all".
EV sales certainly are not tanking. I've noticed the vast majority of new car ads are for EV's. The manufacturers know EVS are better and that they have to compete or die.
Unfortunate that Musk seems to wield absolute power at Tesla. Despise the man love the car.

I think if you study some of the history of the most innovative business people in American history (or in any country, for that matter), you'll discover that most of them "wielded" absolute power in their business.
Personally, I've never met the guy, nor have I heard any more than 10-second soundbites of what he's said. But I do know that he and his team developed Space-X, which currently is the only "reliable" way to get U.S. astronauts to the space station, and back.

We are inclusive and diverse, but dissent will not be tolerated.
Over the first quarter of last year. Not as strong as forecast but hardly tanking.
Meanwhile, sales of large SUVs fell as buyers moved to smaller cars.
