In this last post you make a point that you with your shotgun probably eat duck and I with my hammer probably don't. You essentially acknowledge that your firearm greatly improves if not fully enables your ability to take out a duck at distance at a rapid rate at no significant cost or risk to you. But you can't see how this enhanced ability also enables bad behavior, especially impulsive bad behavior. And there's the equating of all potentially lethal weapons to a firearm. What happened to the old proverb "don't take a knife to a gunfight"?
Guns in isolation don't kill people. People without weapons kill people with some difficulty. People with simple weapons kill people with less difficulty. People with guns kill people with ease.
Ultimately you are correct: further discussion not warranted.
Follow Ups:
that the subject of each of the following sentences is "People".
People without weapons kill people with some difficulty.
People with simple weapons kill people with less difficulty.
People with guns kill people with ease.
Carriage return between each mine.
We need to make it more difficult for one person to kill another person. To reiterate, guns in isolation don't kill people. People with guns kill other people with ease. We aren't yet ready to control people but we can control "guns". Not eliminate them but control them. First step: greatly reduce the number out there and make it way more difficult for the ne'er-do-well to obtain them. Not possible in the US at present. A more likely solution would be a mandate that all persons 16yo+ carry and know how to use. Oops, that evil freedom sucking mandate word. Dystopian for sure.
...I can probably find a "vintage" pair out there on Eprey?
You are more than welcome to come run the serial numbers of any/all of my guns... they've NEVER been involved in a CRIME. I'd say to go police high-crime areas, but then I'd just be a racist--despite the statistics.
Find me some "parents", and hold them responsible--whatever color/race/religion.

But I take em off once in a while to see how things really are.I don't think you're getting it. The discussion isn't about you personally or your weapons cache. The issue at hand is gun crime and mass shootings and how they might be reduced. I really doubt you're part of this problem. But you like so many others immediately personalize and internalize any attempt to control gun crime that involves reduced gun availability or other possible restrictions. An action that has just about zero possibility of occurring in the US in your or my remaining lifetimes.

...but in order to make any sort of meaningful progress, you have to take the word "gun" out of the discussion. How about we re-name the issue "violent crime", instead of "gun crime"? How about we focus on "crime", rather than "gun"? The minute you introduce the word "gun" to the discussion, the wagons are circled on two fronts--those that want to ban/restrict all guns, and those that immediately run-out and buy a dozen more--and the real issue of violent crime is lost.
You're right--legal, responsible gun-owners like myself are not contributing to the problem. Please note that I used two words there--legal AND responsible--they are NOT mutually-inclusive. I know plenty of people that legally own firearms, that probably shouldn't, but they still haven't committed a violent crime, and are not ever likely to. Responsible?--the jury is still out on that one...
People WILL rally-around the idea of reducing "violent crime". The minute you put the word "gun" into the discussion, you've divided your "audience", and all hope of meaningful progress is lost.
Clearly, I realize that guns are involved in a LOT of violent crimes, but not ALL violent crimes, nor are they the CAUSE of violent crime.
I appreciate the civil discourse BTW!

nt
the FBI statistics I quoted to Coner regarding the number of murders committed by rifles of all types?
It's lower than caused by blunt instruments like hammers and clubs. And fewer than half as many than "hands, fists, feet, etc". Click here for source and table. ;)
I want to know what we're going to do about hammers!
The demographics of handgun crime are well understood as you've observed and summarized by a CDC report here.
Some folks don't want to accept this information.
