This is the DVD-Audio* disc from back when. L/R ok, rear surrounds OK, but there is nothing coming out of the center at all. Not just low, nothing at all.

A bunch of other DVD-A and Blu-ray and SACD are fine. Another fellow said his DVD-A does the same, no center output
--> we're wondering if it's a known disc defect?
because it's hard to believe anyone would purposely mix to 4.0 after 5.1 came along.

*has this forum become just SACD? I haven't been here in a while.

There are a number of DVD-Audio and SACD disks that are authored without a centre channel. Emerson, Lake and Palmer's first Brain Salad Surgery DVD-A comes to mind, but there are others. Many are essentially legacy quad releases that didn't have a centre channel.

I am fascinated that geriatric Americans seem to trust their financial decisions to has-been sports and entertainment personalities.

I checked both my file ripped from the DVD-A and the original disc and, for both, there is nothing audible coming out of my center speaker. Jriver identifies it as 6 channels but its spectrum analyzer shows that the center channel is > 30dB down from the other main channels.

So, effectively, this is a 4.1 channel, 24/96 recording.

Curiously, the DVD (not DVD-A) varies track by track. Some are 4.1 (especially those that are of the recording studio work) and others are 5.1.

  Thanks for checking! That is SO weird, I wonder if that was really the mix decision, or some kind of authoring/mastering screwup...

    I think it is intentional since it is somewhat consistent in the movie where they used the 4.1 in the scenes of the recording sessions and 5.1 elsewhere (mostly).
