Sonics are not so important to me. Perhaps I need to listen to Takk again to 'get it'. As I said, I can appreciate it in a technical sense, but I find it does not move me emotionally. I have it here at work on my DAP and ATH-ESW9 portable system - I will give it another shot... and will give it another listen tonight before bed, when I am more relaxed (hopefully).
From your description of the content, () would probably be more to my liking.
Thank you for taking the time to discuss and help me out.
Cheers
Follow Ups:
Y'know, sometimes my openness to music is blocked by a mental or emotional filter that somehow whitens my receptiveness... nothing conscious but certainly present. I also think that 'grasping' for a certain outcome does not help; not solely in the usual sense of having pre-conceived expectations but also a desire and associated 'stress'...Anyhoo, late last night with mental defences / filters lowered, I listened. And enjoyed. There are a few tracks I found somewhat gratuitous / indulgent and did not contribute to the album in a positive sense. So, I can appreciate and even like it, though do not find it the watershed that many folks seem to. Perhaps a few more listens are in order...
Cheers
I wanted to...
But honestly, I don't know what to say about your take here.
I think that it's a fine line sometimes between being too affected and precious and preening and pretentious and being bloody f$#King amazing.
So, I guess that with me: Sigur is the latter. What makes them the latter is that they sound like no one else with that bowed electric guitar builds. With that crazy, intense, and powerful drumming. With all of that spaciousness, that slowly brings instruments in, and really builds tension and drama... (a little like our JD discussion over in rock).
And of course, the nonsensical, haunting, vocals....
The best way that I can say it, and it's true with Joy Division too, is that Sigur Ros are other-worldly... they are so far outside, that they have an immediate and real appeal to me in a way that no other working band has.
If you think you're going to faint, go out in the hallway
Couldn't agree with you more if I tried, sordidman.
