I bought my first pair of Grados about 20 years ago. Good stuff! The Audio Technica phones that had cost me substantially more were dull and muted by comparison. They went in the trash a few days later.
Follow Ups:
The original Grado HP-1 headphones were spectacular. I bought them along with the Grado headphone amplifier in 1991 and I loved them. In fact, I still have them 33 years later. I just sent them in to have the ear-speakers replaced, but they don't seem to sound as good as I remember. Grado told me they couldn't replace the ear-speakers with the original drivers, so I thought they might sound even better with the newest transducers. I guess that's not the case. Anyway, they still sound pretty good, but I like my STAX SR-007 MK2 headphones better.Come to think of it, I like my new $450 FiiO FT5 planar headphones better, too.
Go figure!

Love planar sound. I needed closed back headphones. These worked out great.
