Did you guys see the discussion over on head-fi about the new STAX entry level SR-X1 and associated energizer SRM-270S (replacement for SRM-252S)?
Supposed to hit the market a few months from now.
Ended up returning them. Nowhere near as good as the SR-5.
I used SR-207 cans for a while until the left transducer got funky. Loved them. Enormous soundstage, incredible imaging.
But even my ancient SR-5 are terrific.
The SR-X1 looks like the headband and yokes from the old SR-5 but with different "speaker" units. I'm guessing they're Pro bias. Doesn't matter, I can power either Normal or Pro. Might consider a pair.

What did you specifically dislike about the L300? I've considered the L700 as a step-up from SR-507.

The soundstage was blah, the bass wasn't all that, the highs weren't anything to write home about, and they didn't have that speed on transients that makes Stax Stax. I thought they'd be at least as good as the SR-207 but they weren't even close.
The SR-5 cans are much better, at least to my ears.

I stay away from Head-Fi. I think most of the users are equipment collectors & not music lovers. They quibble over the smallest nits & pick at them. They need to spend more time listening to music.I did just check it out, and I am very impressed. They look terrific. Robust, well-built. Truly nothing boxy strapped to your head. Excellent price. I love my STAX very much, but they look wacky & are VERY fragile. The X1 does not look wacky in the least. I am not in the market currently, (if I were, it would be for a pair of L700), but I could see the X-1 blowing the market wide open if it sounds good. My experience with one of those "mini" engerziers was not good, but that is how you keep the price point for a system at below $1000. They should toss in the stand & cover. They are both required, in my experience.

From the few reports I have read, they say SR-X1 does sound good.
Nice that it has a metal, not plastic yoke and if you can believe it, says it comes with 'sheepskin' ear pads. I had to pay extra for a set of those on my SR-202's.
I've had the little SRM-252II for years, I use it with SR-202 and SR-003 MK2. Sounds pretty good to me although I haven't compared it to the full size amps.

My SR-007Mk2 headphones don't even have yokes. I thought that was really weird, but they seem to work just fine anyway.
The better materials are a huge step-up for STAX. My pairs are all plastic, and I'm always afraid the headband will snap. The X1 headband looks solid & traditional, as do the yokes. Hopefully the ear pads are leather. I didn't see in the pictures how they are attached. Mine are by adhesive sheets, which have failed on my 507 pair, leaving a gooey & sticky mess in my hair when I wear them. (Must replace the adhesive sheets.)

There's no question that these particular STAX headphones and driver unit are the best sounding headphones I've ever owned. However, I still prefer to listen to speakers and I love the sound of my new little Mini Maggie's. Consequently, I listen mostly to my Mini Maggie's and reserve my STAX headphones for those times that I don't want to disturb my wife when she's watching TV.
I owned STAX Lambda Pro headphones back in the 1980s and I've always wanted another pair. That's the reason I bought the SR-007MK2 + SRM-700T system. On the other hand, I'd really like to hear the new SR-X9000 earspeakers, but they're awfully expensive. Nevertheless, I've been thinking of buying them, but so far, I just keep thinking. ;-)

I left speakers over five years ago for STAX. I had never had the right layout for speakers in the townhouses I had lived in. Placement was always an issue, and SEVERE compromise was always required. As a solution, I had played with headphones off & on since 1998, but I was never really convinced. I had settled on Beyerdynamic DT-990 600Ohm phones paired with a kit-built Crack OTL amp. I thought it sounded good. I then compared it to my STAX SR-207 pair & the tiny stock energizer right after I bought it second-hand from a fellow in Canada who was losing his hearing. I couldn't believe the difference. The Beyers & Crack sounded like mud, thick & dead-sounding audio.
I've been listening to LPs though my STAX system for a while now, and I am very pleased. Speed, clarity, and that "vinyl thing" that can be hard to define in concrete terms. Our equipment is expensive & fussy, but It's worth it.

It's often difficult to find the best placement for speakers in a listening room, so I can understand your attraction to headphones. However, I've always been fortunate to buy houses with good listening rooms. In fact, that's one of the criteria I look for when buying a home. I think high ceilings are important and my current home has a slanted ceiling that goes from 8-feet at the rear end to 14-feet at the front end of my listening room. Additionally, I have my speakers set up for ultra near-field listening, which provides an enormous soundstage and simply holographic imaging. I also now use Magnepan planar speakers, which have become my all time favorites. In fact, they sound very similar to my STAX headphones. At any rate, I still prefer listening to speakers, but I also love my new STAX headphones.Here are some pictures of my current system:
