Here is hard to find instructions on changing tubes in the current and older STAX driver amps that use (6FQ7/6CG7) type tubes.
I use LOW NOISE NOS RCA CLEAR TOPS that can still be found with a web search.
They have given me the best sound quality.
Follow Ups:
The best thing you can do to improve the quality of the Stax tube output amps is to substitute a constant current loads for the plate resistors. All the Stax solid state output amps have constant current loads, which is the reason that they have a significantly higher maximum output than any of their tube output amps. The plate resistors burn/waste more than half of the signal current generated by the output tubes.

on your listening levels. The issues that some people notice as they increase the volume are: 1) some softness/flabbiness in the bass, 2) some darkening and loss of high frequency detail, 3) some coarsening of upper meds. These issues worsen as level increases. To me, it's not so much a matter of increasing the ultimate volume, although the mod does do that, but more a matter of improving the sound quality within the envelope. By eliminating the signal current drain from the plate resistors, I feel the sound quality is improved.

I am currently running a Woo Audio WEE from my speaker amp, which is a push pull amp using 2 pairs of KT88s. Compared to the Stax amp, the sound is richer, more detailed, and you can actually get volume on the SR-007s. Even my SR-404s sound better.
I am not saying the Stax amps are bad, but even the SR-404s sound better with this set-up.
cheers

I have heard that the L700 is quite a nice headphone, haven't heard one myself. I am willing to bet if you like it through a Stax amp if you heard it through an even better amp driver you would love it even more...
But $6000 is too much for me.

And its driven by the Woo Audio GES. Its a very nice setup and outperforms my old Stax Lambda Pros.
