How do I connect my headphones to an OPPO and Tempest combo without spending a wad of money on a headphone amp?
Follow Ups:
Well you could run your Rogue Tempest amp into a switch box that splits the output into two pairs of left and right channels. One pair feeding your loudspeakers, the other pair padded down to a suitable voltage to drive the headphones.
This is a lot of effort to do due to constructing the L pad attenuators. The level of attenuation will depend upon the pair of headphones selected. As the result includes several wiring junctions and a switch the outcome in sound quality terms is not guaranteed. I did it myself many years ago before dedicated headphone amplifiers were generally available. The result worked in the sense of I could hear a signal through the headphones but it wasn't great.
A headphone amp would be far preferable IMO. However how to connect it to your system? The common way to add a headphone amp is to connect it to the out terminals of a tape circuit. Your Rogue Tempest does not have a tape circuit. This amp does have a pre out but that will not provide a line level output which as the volume control of the Tempest will still be in circuit. You may therefore need to switch connections at the Oppo end of things when swapping from speakers to headphone.
Sorry there is no really viable cost free option.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. you get a gold star.
My Tempest preamp is a Stratos Tempest and has a tape out. My cans are OPPO planers.
Thanks again.
This has already been mentioned, but Schiit makes an excellent headphone amplifier for $99. You can connect it to your tape output if you're not using it for a recorder. Even if you're already using the tape output, you can still connect the Schiit headphone amplifier because it has an output connected directly to its input like a Y-adapter. In fact, that's what it's designed for.
Check out the Schiit Magni headphone amplifier at the link below.
Another gold star!
Thanks for the good information.

Do get a headphone amp.......
Both of these companies make inexpensive headphone amps as well as combined dac/amps.
Or for ~$300 you can get a first-rate Drop THX 789 headphone amp that has plenty of power for just about any pair of headphones, as well as clean and clear sound. It's sold on drop.com and also on Amazon.
I think you're out of luck. You obviously bought the wrong Oppo because my Oppo BDP-105D has a headphone port on the front panel. You'll probably have to buy a headphone amp, but it doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive headphone amp.
Good luck,

Oppo UDP-203
Well, the UDP-205 has a headphone port on the front panel.

Is there anyway I can rate the value of an answer?
you know, back in the day things were much simpler
anyone could enjoy a set of 'cans' ... literally anyone

You can still enjoy a set of cans if you buy an inexpensive headphone amplifier.
Schiit Audio is your friend. Nice headphone amps starting at $100.
