The left ear plug(the tiny plug withe two tiny pins) is intermitant. Its not the wire leading up to the connector because if I hold onto the connector and move the wire its OK. So it has to be the connection. I was thinking of getting a new HD650 cable but Im worried that its the female thats loose (I could be wrong). If thats the case I dont think its repairable. If I wiggle the connection around a few seconds it will be OK for a few hours.

I own Sennhiser 600 headphones and have the same problem.
The springs that make contact with the headphone cord pins are made of chrome plated steel wire, believe it or not. The chrome layer flakes off and then the problems begin.
Sennheiser engineers design microphones, they should have known better: gold plating is the answer, it costs only a few cents to do properly.
After trying all kinds of fixes, I soldered a thin piece of copper wire from each cord pin to the headphone driver connectors. It is a tricky job, you need low-temperature solder and a pencil-tip soldering station.
Switch the left cable over to the right side and vica versa and see if the issue follows the cable or not.
Not sure about HD580s, but the HD650s are known to have the same problem. It has to do with the spring that the headphone cord plugs into -- it can become loose and cause the problem you are describing. When I had HD650s, I would take them apart and fix the spring following instructions I found on Head-Fi. You might want to look there. I recently upgraded to HD800s, which has an entirely different mechanism for attaching the headphone cord that eliminates this problem.
I have the HD530s that I use only a few times a year. What I do when there is an intermittant problem is to spray the plug and the plug receptacle with electrical contact cleaner. Works nicely for me.
Of course the suggestion for a replacement cable may also be something you want to try. After having the HD530s in storage for a few years they benefitted greatly from a new replacement cable.
I can heartily recommend the 650 cable upgrade and you can order it directly from Sennheiser USA for about $20 or so, if I recall correctly. The sonic improvements are subtle (but noticeable). But the best part is that the connector plugs are much sturdier than those on the stock 580/600 cable - and I'm betting that the intermittent connection will be gone once a new cable is installed.
