In Reply to: RE: Are you using it as the pre-amp for those fancy-assed powered monitors of yours? /n posted by Ivan303 on October 22, 2018 at 14:26:36
No, I use ....tubes ( EAR 868PL running Telefunken 7DJ8s).
I have however tried the SPL Phonitor 2 as a control unit for my active ATCs and it was very good indeed. Frankly better than either of my purpose built SS preamps ( albeit with limited flexibility).
I now use the SPL's balanced outputs to drive my Sennheiser HD600s. This requires an adaptor to convert the two 3 pin XLR outputs to a single 4 pin XLR so as to be compatible with the standard pin layout for balanced headphones. The original HD600 cable is substituted by the balanced HD650 one. Which, BTW, has the most gorgeous looking XLR connector I have seen.
Follow Ups:
They were a version of the '50' made for the discerning audiophile with a discerning pocketbook.
$30,000 for the pair, with much better cabinets (floor standers) and amps that the $15,000 a pair 'Pro' '50' series available at most pro audio shops here.
Yes, they sounded VERY good.
Ended up with Joseph Audio 'Pulsar' stand mounts (OK, at the moment they are 'chair mounts').
They are a good match for my Ayre AX7e integrated and surprisingly fill the room with very good sound with only 60 Watts per channel from the Ayre. He demonstrates the floor standing version of them in rather large rooms with 80 Watt per channel tube amps somehow. Easy load for tube dropping from 8 Ohms to just 6 Ohms across the frequency range.
If it gets cold this winter I can break out one of my tube amps and give that a go.

Yes those special ATC 50s are very pleasing to the eye. The pro 50 is just finished in black industrial spray paint. It also can be distinguished from the domestic version by having a plate on the baffle that can be removed to re-orientate tweeter for horizontal placement. The original domestic version (mine) has a nice wood veneer.
The floorstander alternative is also available without having to pay top dollar for the special edition types. These are the "Tower" series. However this style of cabinet is really for cosmetic purposes and offers no performance gain that I am aware of, in fact there is an argument for the opposite.
I really like the Pulsars and they are my favourite Joseph model. I find his others a wee bit hot in the treble for my tastes. I don't think he has any distribution in the UK and I only get to hear them when I go to the Munich show. A big plus is the great music that Jeff Joseph chooses for his demonstrations. One of the few exhibitors where you can just enter the room and have fun listening to the music.
