I just received this amp and it is awesome!!! I'm not going to go on and on about why you should get one, because maybe it's not for everyone. But if you can demo one definitely put it on your short list. Driving my Grado RS 2e elevated them to a new level. It's like they were voiced with each other. I shut myself off from the outside world and am going to spend the rest of the night digging up ear candy.

For that price, you could could have gone with tubes. Don't know about the RS2e, but no solid state amp delivers the realism and clarity I hear when my Grado SR60s are driven by a good tube amplifier.

Sure I could have, my pre and amps are tube, so I love tube gear but only if it can kick the crap out of it's solid state peers. After listening to a number of headphone amps both tube and solid state, I took a leap of faith and bought it sight unseen. It has balanced and RCA plus. 1/8" input which is nice. I have a Pelican case for it and my phones so if I travel or work out of state I can enjoy some quality sound. Tube gear is definitely not portable like the Neve. The clarity of this has to be heard to be believed in addition to ZERO noise .... zero. The intelligibility and ability to hear or I should say unlock sounds and spatial cues I've never heard on CDs I played a hundred times is spooky. Don't dismiss this because it is a piece of pro audio gear, it has audiophile performance and industrial build quality , built here in the USA and is in my opinion worth every penny.
Theres only a few $500 tube headphone amps that im aware of even close to that price and they are designed with high impedance phones, Woo and Bottlehead come to mind . Just curious, what amp are you using?
All my tube gear is hand built by me. The amp I'm referring to isn't a headphone amp per se. It's a 4W/ch SEP that barely wiggles to power the Grados. The amp is extremely linear in this application, and very quiet. I hear no background noise or hum at full volume with shorted inputs. You might be correct about the pricing for commercial amps. Low impedance loads are a problem for less expensive amps (a 12AU7 won't drive low-Z phones). Also, this isn't portable. I could make a smaller one with submini tubes if I needed to, but even that wouldn't be as portable as SS. All things considered, it sounds like you did well. You bought a US product and the sound is killer. Can't beat that. :)

The Grado RS2e are a gateway drug..... this is my first exposure to good headphone listening. I will definitely be getting another pair of phones in the near future, but for the money I think they sound great.
It's so much more of a personal choice and taste compared to speakers ... why? I don't know but I seemed to like more of the speakers I have listened to or auditioned than headphones.
Down the road I would love to build a kit like Bottlehead. Its great you can build from scratch...
