What's to love about the 5670? Have you looked at the plate curves? The SE Asian manufacturers have latched onto it because it's cheap. As for switchers, the noise can be pushed down to inaudible levels with careful design. I measure products with noise below -170 dBC in my day job. That's WAY below the internal noise generated by any vacuum tube. Some of the test gear that makes these measurements is powered by switching supplies.

You like triodes with OPT and small cap values. My amp meets this requirement. I've been looking at other designs and some of these commercial headphone amps have gigantic electrolytics in the signal path. Why bother if you are starting out with that kinda of flaw. So much crap out there. I'm quite surprised to find so few if any commercial products built by this criteria. No wonder I picked my amp out of a crowd. Did you ever build the one where you said parts would be around $100 for a similar circuit, triode with OPT and small coupling caps? T456

Well, just to clarify, the concept of smaller caps is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. My smaller SE amps (which I use for phones) have 6V6 outputs, and the cathodes are bypassed with electrolytics. When they were initialy built, I set up the second channel with no bypass at all, then adjusted it so gain was exactly the same as the bypassed amp. Maybe my friends/family and I are all deaf, but none of us could hear a difference in blind A-B testing. I can't always point to an amp after an audition and tell you what there is about its internal design that makes it sound good (or bad). I've heard superb performance from both triodes and pentodes, as well as from various cap sizes and types. Sometimes, things just add up the right or wrong way unintentionally. Bear in mind I'm only talking about listening tests in this respect. Amps and other gear first need to pass a suitable standard for measurable parameters like frequency response and distortion first. No sense attempting a critical listening test with garbage. :)

I chose the Elekit TU-882 headphone amp at at a show and it beat everything I listened to. Then I rolled quite a number of tubes until I found the magic 5670. I don't want to go through tube rolling again. The amp also was dead quiet before I ruined it. I also suspect the feel good nature of the amp has something to do with the fact that it is a SET. Don't know for sure. What I do know is there are quite a few headphone amps out there that suck bigtime. I was shocked at the show when I heard amps that had no merit at all, up to like $1200 and one or two diy projects. The amp I posted a photo of is not SET but is tube output instead of transformer. I don't see any all tube amps out there other than the one I have that is SET and uses the 5670 except maybe in a circuit board w/o box and PS. T456
