Part of the reason is that his hearing loss is worsening. He plans to sell his house and live in an 88 sq ft converted Fedex van. Video of the van is on the website.
Sad to see the retirement of someone who essentially made the headphone hobby exist and brought about the birth of the headphone amplifier market.
Follow Ups:
could this be a partial result of the new management arrangement at Stereophile? it certainly appears that he has taken the bull by the horns and has control of his destiny, good to see.
i can't help but detect a certain undertone on his YT farewell that suggests to me that he wasn't exactly ready to make this move independently. i look forward to seeing him show up at our LA/OC Audio Society meetings and future LAAS outings.
i am new to the community of headphone users but plan to begin to be more involved due to retirement ant the necessity incurred by that.

I got in the hobby right around the time that HeadRoom and headphones were taking off. It's been quite an exciting ride. I'm happy that Tyll got to see the fruits of his labors. I hope he enjoys traveling the world and making music in real-time.
This is truly sad news. He IS InnerFidelity. As you say the whole audiophile headphone market is hugely in his debt and exists in part to his championing from the early 1990s when he formed HeadRoom.
I have followed his writings on 'phones since his in print pieces in Stereophile ( before we all had the internet I guess). His reviews have been accurate and honest. He is ( or was, now) one of the few audio writers whose opinion could be relied upon. Plus he measures!
Big shoes for his successor to fill. I hope that he has a great time following his travelling dream.
