I use a MacBook Air and cd player as a source. I have a sony x1600 pmpthat is a great source. Wondering how to properly connect it to my headroom desktop amp. should I be putting the sony to full volume and use the headroom to control output or put the headroom to higher output and control volume from the sony? What is the better method?

Would you want to take a chance that the headphone amp is cranked to the max when you plug in another source and hit PLAY? I wouldn't.
If the Sony has a line out, that would be even better.
Thanks guys for the input. I tried the headphone out on the Sony using a mini-rca to regular red/white rca into the Headroom analog input. Sony was at full volume. The output on the Sony was quite low so I had to turn the Headroom amp to 12 o'clock. Sound-wise it was good but I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but I think I heard a bit of light static here and there. The detail unfortunately was not the same as what the Headroom's amp is able to produce when using the Air as the source. The Sony sounds great with my Sennheiser IE8 earphones but I guess that's expected seeing how it's for a different purpose. Oh well, was worth a shot trying out.
You can try it both ways and find out for yourself. Or, you can always try to contact the manufacturer(s) for any technical questions pertaining to the design and/or operating requirements of a piece of gear. Try contacting Headroom first, because you will probably get an answer more quickly that way. The ones who designed the gear should know! If they say it does not matter which way you do it, I would probably try it both ways anyway (just to prove to myself the truth of the matter). If neither way sounds better and neither way is the recommended way, then obviously it would not matter which way you do it. Also, once you find out the answer to your question and/or have tried everything you can try please let us know what the final results were.

Yeah, I was just hoping for a quick answer/confirmation (don't want to possibly damage anything). I'll try it tonight and see what works.
