I have been thinking about getting in to headphone audio. Based on what I have read here and in other places I was leaning towards buying something like a Decware Taboo MkIII headphone amp. Then I saw a bunch of glowing reviews for the Chord Hugo. If it works as advertised it is an attractive option. Combined with a Mac Mini (currently not in my budget) it would give me a headphone system that I could play literally anywhere. Its $2,500 cost puts it in the price range of some very nice amps. Does anyone here have any information on the Hugo?

It's a little unusual that you're considering a tube amp that plugs into the wall with no DAC vs. a battery powered portable amp with a DAC.
The Hugo would be amazing as a travel amp, but probably not a great idea to pair it with power hungry or high impedance headphones.
You'll have to figure out whether you want to move your amp around much, which headphones you'd like to use, and how annoyed you will be if DAC technology moves forward drastically in a few years.
Works really good with the Sennheiser 300Ohm and Beyer 600 Ohm headphones I have here so it doe spair well and love it one of the best combos for the HD800.
it does fine with my HE560's, LCD-2, TH900 and the rest of my phones all except the HE-6, which are notorious for requiring ample power. It does a great job feeding the Lyr 2 but standing on its own, it is fine on the road or at home.
all in my opinion

I have enjoyed the Hugo immensely. It can drive just about any headphone sand is musical and one fo the very best I have heard with the Sennheiser HD800. Love it with the planarl and music will sound terrific. Cant miss with the Hugo.
besides an excellent dac section that will make redbook cd's sound better than I have ever heard them, does all the other resolutions and does great in a home speaker system. The internal amp is extremely good driving everything I have thrown at it, though I use the Lyr 2 for the HE-6 in combination with the Hugo as the dac. I often use the iBasso DX90 as a source, which it is also very good at, using the coax.

Thanks. Do you have a preferred headphone or type of headphone that works best with the Hugo? Do you have any knowledge of Chord's reputation for customer service?
a very good reputation and seems to take care of their customers. IMO the Hugo is very advanced.
For headphones it drives about everything. I use the Fostex TH900, and really like the HiFiman HE 560, which I consider better than the LCD line of phones, of which I have the LCD-2.

Thanks again.
BTW, is your dog named Kujo?I've heard little about the Chord so far, but I've heard plenty about the Decware.
Decware products come with a lifetime warranty and are as close to "Made in the USA" as you are going to find.
The UK makes some excellent products too, but getting warranty/repair service for products from the EU might not be as easy as with those made in the USA.
I'd probably go for the Decware, but that's just me.
However, if portability and a DAC is high on your list of priorities then the choice is obvious: Go with the Chord.

Thanks. It was your post that got me start researching the Decware products. My main system is tube based, so that is where I started looking. the portability makes the Hugo tempting.
Call Chad Stelly at acousticsounds.com and ask him. He gave me some good advice on this recently.

mbnx01,
I prefer to buy new products locally if possible, so I would hate to take up his time. Could you give me a hint as to what I would learn from the call? Thumbs up? Thumbs down?
Thanks,
Hujo
Then why not just go listen to one?

I am going to demo a Hugo tomorrow. I have found that I make my best audio decisions based on a combination of reviews and personal experience. Perhaps my ears are not as good as other's. My worst decisions have been caused by a good salesperson. My best decisions have been based on a combination of listening guided by the opinions of others. The Hugo is so new that there is not a lot of information from actual users. Any advice you offer would be appreciated.

Not a lot of information? There is plenty of info on head-fi.org.

Thanks. I am new to headphones.

If we could all hear everything why would we need to ask for advice?
How many posts are 'has anyone heard this'?
A LOT.
Once you can actually hear something it doesn't matter what the f*ck someone on a forum says about it.
Unless you need to have other people tell you what to like, what to buy, etc...
