and if you feel the amp has enough poop to drive a 600 ohm DT-880 and you like open cans, I'd just bit the bullet and get the Sennheiser HD-600 and be done with it forever.
I think you can now get them for about $300 if you shop around. Probably should have bought what you ended up with for USB DAC and AMP rather than the AudioEngine D1, which while great for use with a lab top as it's one small piece and USB powered, just not the perfect match for the HD-600.
But I'm a sucker for the HD-600 mellow mids.

It's certainly worth considering, but the best price I can find for the HD600s is $400... Above my self-imposed "hard limit".
That said, I think I've got a nice list of possible choices to consider at this point...
Thanks,
SF

My experience is that I've wasted money trying to be being too cheap, especially transducers.
I've not purchased from them but they used to have 'B' stock even cheaper
Also someone mentioned talking to Brian at RAZORDOG for special pricing.

Brian will sell them for 295.00 new
I've had good results with them. Returns not a problem.

You just had to throw a wrench into the works!
Alright, I'll play along ;-)... Just how "bass-shy" are the 600's?
How do they serve up kick drum and electric bass on, say a Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones track?
Electronica?
I don't need my eardrums caved in, but I DO need good impact and bass definition.
How do they compare with your new Beyer's?

Not sure they would be my FIRST choice for kick ass 'Rock and Roll'.
I'm at bit of a Classical Vinyl, Flea Power Tube amp and Big Horns guy so the HD-600 are right in my strike zone.
They are more of a 'mid-range magic' kind of can.
I think you are on the right track looking for something with tight bass from Beyer Dynamic, say the DT-880 or DT-990, if my DT-770's are representative of the Beyer Dynamic house sound.
