I wonder about the amount of hype, and how it connects to credibility.
I say this because I had a roommate back in the seventies who had pair of tower speakers , kind of a tall wooden cube configuration with a slanted top containing one driver with a tweeter mounted in the middle, above the cone.
he said he found them in curbside trash, possible in his neighborhood, and took them home because they looked good.
they had an electrical cord that he was unsure about and never used, but he liked the way they sounded and looked. they did look very high end, with a very unconventional protruding surround on the main , maybe 8 inch, driver .
I convinced him to try plugging them in, and they instantly sounded louder and much better. I assume this was because the speaker used wall powered voice coils, whereas an internal amplifier would have used vents, and blocked the signal when unpowered. the roommate said he was afraid of using them with power because they looked old, and continued to run them as before.
perhaps the folks who wrote the hype didn't care about substantiating their claim , since it would be very difficult to find out about every single driver ever made. however, to me, it effects credibility , which reflects on the product. Of course, anyone paying that kind of coin for a raw driver is not looking for logical buying triggers.
Follow Ups:
...before my last post. Just went to the PAP website and built the biggest speaker they have (the Quintet 15) with the most expensive of the five different Voxativ drivers they offer as options (the AC X) and every additional option available and the price was $24,500 the pair shipped to the US. His dinky two driver model are likely half of that cost.
...is not the $69K driver being referenced in the picture. PAP doesn't sell any model in the $100K range or even close, as far as I know.
