Like all real inmates, I have bits and pieces around the house, always enough to build another system or two. The guest room received a new TV with an optical output. What to do? Well a pair of Vanguard Scout speakers, a little Lepai Class D amp, and a Schiit Modi DAC make for a pretty good system for discerning guests, or even guests not particularly satisfied with the sound of a small TV speaker.
Need to clean up cabling, but it sounds quite nice - and certainly better than most guest or hotel rooms in which I've stayed.
Follow Ups:
I am using a Lepai 20x20 from a Firestone Fubar DAC driving Dynaudio 42s from JRiver. Surprising sound.
I chose six genres and programmed them into six preset channels on top of the Bose. Press the channel button or tell Alexa what you want to hear.Or the Bose can be streamed to over Wifi or Bluetooth which makes it no brainer easy for family and guests to stream using their own music App from their own phone.
Look ma.... No wires!
The hefty powered Bose don't blow for its intended use.

This album playing on the Bose is being streamed via Roon/Qobuz over AirPlay2 Wifi from my iPhone.

Almost any place would be better than where they are now. Try thinking "outside of the box".If placed on top of the bookshelf, try using angled risers to point the speakers downward...

All good suggestions.

Like many, I don't like the sound of a tv. My living room has a Sharp 55 tv to a Benchmark dac1 usb to a Marantz 2220b to some cheap Klipsch bookshelf speakers. Gets airplay, good picture, and decent sound with some bass sound. Only shortcoming is no remote. Some apps are easier to access than the lg in my lounge, or what the English call a bed-sitter. How sweet it is.

does it support Bluetooth? All nieces and nephews who visit during family events enjoy their music services via phone access.
If the "TV" is the music source, that might limit choices for those interested.
I recently discovered that convenience with the garage system using retired iPhone8 for streaming Bandcamp and SiriusXM.
No Bluetooth. However,TV does support some music apps.
