This was interesting to see/hear...cover songs that you may not have known were covers (probably age related!)
Follow Ups:
and another one....Diamonds and Rust----Joan Baez/Judas Priest
and.....This Flight Tonight....Carly Simon/Nazareth

Santana vs. Fleetwood Mac - "Black Magic Woman" & Santana vs. The Zombies - "She's Not There"...I never quite understood the lyrics so always preferred Wes Montgomery's cover of "A Day In The Life". In Hawaii all the kids think Israel Kamakawiwole wrote "Over The Rainbow" but the covers by Ray Charles & Papa John Creach are my favorites.
my fave cover tunes album...still going strong 15 years on
are very good.
"No Mermaid" and "Who Do You Think I Am" on her album "Gone From Danger".
Sinead Lohan also covered Dylan's "To Ramona" to good effect.
all the best,
mrh
No one has mentioned Pat Boone, who made a virtual career covering far superior black R & B performers: Fats Domino, Little Richard, Ivory Joe Hunter, Ray Charles, et al. You haven't lived until you've seen him lip-synching "Long Tall Sally" or "Tutti Frutti"!!! The man brought new meaning to the word "insipid."
Another one Janis covered - "Ball and Chain" by Big Momma Thorton.
Now that is one "other-worldly" version! :-))
Other cover albums that I enjoy:
* "Dub Side of the Moon" by the Easy Star All Stars.
* "Lonely Hearts Dub Band" by the same.
* Jennifer Warnes singing Leonard Cohen ("Famous Blue Raincoat").
* the Glass/Cohen collaboration "The Book of Longing" - music by Philip Glass, words by Leonard Cohen, sung by 4 operatic voices.
* "I'm Your Fan" - the songs of Leonard Cohen by various people, including the Pixies, REM and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
* "Power of Soul" - A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
* "Is It Rolling Bob?" - A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan.
* "Dreams of Freedom" by Bill Laswell - Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub.
* "Bob Marley: Chant Down Babylon" - covers of Bob Marley songs by various people, including Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.

Andy

Big Mama Thornton did the definitive version IMO, Elvis made the money with it.
z
Manfred Mann's "Blinded...." was already mentioned.........
The Who of course did the original, but has been using Elton's modified lyrics in concerts.........
The Aerosmith version is the one you usually hear, but The Yardbirds recorded it back in the early '60s.

goes back further than that...it was a rockabilly song popularized by Johnny Burnette
Also the first song played in rehearsal by Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham.
it might be older than I knew.
Thanks,
mark
Actually, 'The Train Kept A Rollin' was originally done by Tiny Bradshaw in the early 50's..
Time is on My Side.
They left out the one I know best, Roberta Flack's hit, just months after Lori Leiberman recorded that song.
.
I got them all playing at once and the result was cacophony.
