Hi all
I posted some questions on speakers forum, but let me ask your opinions combined with amplifier. I bought a new home which has about 20 ft x 20 ft (400 sq ft) living room where I will put my stereo system. I have an OK source (Sony SCD 1), I don't care about cables although many ppl still claim its importance, I have $10k budget to spend. So I am looking for a pair of speakers and an integrated amplifier.
There are many factors that matter to me, but let me just list 3 of them in order.
1. Bass slam
2. Smooth but detailed (I cannot stand harsh sound)
3. Tonal balance.
So I left out timber, soundstage, rich human voice, etc. I don't think I can get everything.
Please recommend or share any of your experience that might be of help to me.
Thanks in advance
Doug
Follow Ups:
New Vandersteen Quatros or used Vandersteen 5s and a Plinius integrated (I believe 9200 may be the one of the latest models). You could get this for around $10K and you would be getting very deep, natural bass and superb sound overall. The limitations of your source would soon become evident, but you can deal with that in the future. Try to listen before you buy, as all speakers have their own personalities, and you should be sure what you buy suits you. It's worth making a significant trip to hear speakers when you are investing at this level.

I searched for dealers of speakers/amps mentioned, and found out that there are very few hi-end dealers left. Every shop is selling home theaters with cheap electronics!
Thanks
Doug
in a room that size, I'd get myself a pair of "gunned" Magnepan MMGs
(search planar speaker forum for "peter gunn" or "gunned" or "mmg"),
and the best tube integrated that will drive those speakers to a
listening level I'm comfortable with - perhaps a Mac or a Cary, or
maybe even a BAT VK300x with 6922 tubes.
Happy spending.

My humble suggestion
Source to be Linn Sondek turntable
Accuphase amp
AudioNnote speakers
Maybe a little more than 10k but worth it.
New Pass integrated ($6500) + Gallo Reference 3.
If I had your $10k I would buy a lovely pair of Tannoy Yorkminstor prestige,
used on Audiogon, and the Vifa Solista 845 also used on Agon.
I have no affiliation with either. Just Dreaming

McIntosh integrated amp and Sonus Faber speakers ... don't have exact recs or prices, but they are supposed to really sing together.
A full Audio Note system will deliver the goods you seek. Does the SCD 1 have a digital output?
A real world system that you could put in a real home might consist of the new"ish" Sim Audio 1-7 and the most expensive Dynaudio up to your budget of $10K (maybe a countour floodstander?). Of course your opinion of how well this gear will fit your criteria might be different than mine.... But these are both good companies that make outstanding products.

Here's what I'd buy...
Ayre AX-7e - $3,500.00
REL R205 - $1,200.00
REL R205 - $1,200.00
Green Mountain Audio Eos III - $4,300.00
Total - $10,200.00
its active....no amp needed
The Revolution Active includes an active crossver between woofer and midrange. You have to supply the 4 channels of amplification.

...there are numerous tube integrateds that would be a nice fit. Vandy 3A sigs would leave you nearly $6.5K or an amp and the cloth-covered Vandy Quatros would leave you closer to $3K for an amp but have a pair of built-in powered subs which alters the amplification requirements.
The Gallos *with* the dedicated bass amp would be about as pricey as the 3As. That also gives you pretty much leeway. The best system I know of around here uses the Gallos.
Both will hold their value.

rock on baby!!! add some ESL57s or KLH9s and a pair of futterman OTL amps to the khorns and 2a3 PP amps and then youll total bragging rights.
That was an introduction to audiophile sound back in the 1970's because my friends mother had a McIntosh/KLH9 setup. Sounded great back then but I had nothing else to compare with. Anyone here ever own them? How can you desribe the sound?
Are the size/look of the speakers important to you, or will anything go as long as it fits?
I'd probably say Edgarhorns running actively with SET amps...but I'm a tube guy...maybe you could list other things that you've heard and liked a lot?
