Hey Abe,
I'd be interested if you hear any sonic difference between Qobuz Connect vs. access through Roon?
I don't have any streamers that are Connect compatible but with a lifetime subscription to Roon, I'm curious if the Connect apps (Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon etc.) pull potential subscribers from Roon? Any thoughts?
Follow Ups:
I should have time to try Qobuz streaming via Qobuz Connect vs Qobuz via Roon later this week. I'm guessing that any sonic differences will be minor but I'll give it a try.I subscribed to Roon for two years when they first launched thinking they might go belly up in short order. Roon looked very promising so I purchased a lifetime subscription and I've been a Roon user for several years now. A couple other players are trying to copy their feature set and business model. Audirvana comes to mind. We'll see how they do.

There are several lively discussions about this on the Roon community site. As you might imagine, things are extremely polarized between the "bits are bits" faction and the "I believe what my ears tell me" people. It has gotten personal, passionate, and vicious at times (just like things do sometimes here on AA). I hope we don't feel the need to rehash it on this forum, since there is plenty of rhetoric available elsewhere.
FWIW, the Roon developers have never to my knowledge made any claims about changes or improvements to sound quality (other than through the discretionary use of their built-in DSP engine).
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
OK I guess...but I'm just curious if he hears a difference, not adding to the speculation of why a difference may exist (i.e. "better").
The other question was intended to get input regarding the long anticipated introduction of Qobuz Connect and whether that might pull current and potential subscribers away from Roon...might it threaten the continued development of their business. Nothing to do with Roon developers claims of superior sound.
Okay, sorry if I came off sounding like your high school teacher. It's just that I've seen too many discussions start with a valid question like yours and quickly degrade into bickering and name calling. The pat response is "just don't read it" but that's simplistic - I want to engage in a meaningful dialog but then all this horses**t gets in the way. I don't want to change the channel. People should act like adults. You are curious as to Abe's opinion. I get that; he is apparently a knowledgeable and experienced listener who has access to both platforms. I'd say the same about dozens of people in the Roon community, and they are divided. Some say they hear a difference between Roon and QC; many others say that it is scientifically impossible for there to be any difference if both are bit perfect as they claim. There seems to be no middle ground.
As to whether QC will poach subscribers from Roon, I think it's too early to say. I've been using Roon for ten years; QC hasn't been around long enough to build a track record. My point was that Roon has never claimed to be about sound quality. Roon claims to pass a bit perfect signal to your streamer, no more. The major complaint against Roon seems to be that it costs $12.50/mo., and some people don't see the value of anything that isn't free. Ironically, many of those same people will not hesitate to pay hundreds of $$ for a power cable or a fuse. If you've tried Roon and don't like it, I won't argue with that. But if you can't stomach $0.42 per day, you are probably in the wrong hobby. As long as QC is free to subscribers, it will have support.
Final point: you wrote "Nothing to do with Roon developers claims of superior sound." . As I wrote earlier, there are no such claims.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .

No need for apologies...I get where you're coming from and am in earnest agreement (despite my mischaracterization of Roon's non-position on audio quality.)
Besides, our systems share the same equipment on the digital side (Oppo as transport to Holo Audio Spring DAC with microRendu streamer) so we're obviously simpatico.
