His oscilloscope measurements show barely 0.1 Vpp for the stock SPDIF output. To be within the SPDIF spec it should be more like 0.5 - 0.6 Vpp or greater. The SPDIF receiver spec calls for no less than 0.2 Vpp so his stock output signal is very weak. Relative to the out-of-spec or broken stock output level, I guess his mod is 'high performance'.
