You PAY FOR Roon but great products are often not FREE. On the other hand LMS / piCorePlayer are very popular and won't cost you a dime.
If you go the Roon route I highly recommend NOT buying a Nucleus. You can save a ton of money by just installing Roon on a decent PC/Mac.... preferably a small quiet one like a Mac Mini or Intel NUC.
The installation and setup are very user friendly as are software updates. Roon default settings just work but you do have a lot of flexibility to change things if you choose to dig deeper.
Follow Ups:
I hadn't considered using a PC or laptop but I do have a Win10 Pro laptop that I'm replacing with a Win11 laptop. The older laptop could be cleaned up to run with bare bones software and Roon. I'm assuming that I could park the Roon laptop just about anywhere there's an Ethernet connection and use my Android phone as the controller in the stereo room.
You can use a phone or larger screen tablet to navigate and control Roon. I use my iPad or the big screen TV in the basement. While my iPhone will work I prefer having more screen real estate. On a related note Audirvana used to be my favorite and was quite good. They keep improving it and I just read they have a nice remote control feature now for iOS or Android devices.

Wow, that's a lot of features for a very reasonable annual cost. And now an app for Android phones. Hmmm...
