Yes what I meant was connecting via standard RCA cables. Currently I'm using the digital coax connection. If using the CD chip will get better sound, then that's what I'll switch to. I plan on replacing my Marantz CD 5003 player with a newer CD 6006 with a better D/A converter.

Follow Ups:
... that the DA converter is not the sole arbiter of the resulting sound. The sound ultimately depends upon the analogue output stage after conversion. It is the product of that plus the DAC chip which is what you actually hear. So only a better DAC chip is no guarantee.

I have often observed the same thing. Some extol the virtues of having units with ultra high PCM or DSD sample rates but still using cheap op amps and a small SMPS.
I'm far more interested in the analog stage.
Don't you think it's fair to assume the newer model Marantz has a better D/A converter with a better analogue output stage?

I'm not assuming anything. The fact that a given DAC chip is newer does not indicate that the resulting sound will be better. How many times has a new "improved" component proved to be less good than its predecessor?
A new DAC chip alone , just like any component, is not necessarily an indicator of resulting improved sound. Why would a new DAC chip mean a better analogue output stage as well? It could just as easily mean the opposite if the cost of the new chip was offset by paring the cost of the output stage. Such is the reality of product engineering.
Ultimately you can only judge by what your own ears tell you.

No.
I'd imagine that your preamp may have better analogue with a shorter path. Of course, the Marantz may be different and more preferable.
I've been playing with streamers and various DACs. An Allo Boss DAC directly with RCA out versus a Logitech Touch streamer to either a Tascam 3000 or a modded Perpetual Tech PR3A. They all sound great. I can flip one input to another and the levels are all real close and seriously can't tell much if any difference. Perhaps one has a bit more air, but I could be either deaf or fooling myself.

Rod as an aside, the BOSS DAC on top of the Pi is good but you can achieve better results with the Allo DigiOne SPDIF board in place of the BOSS, using the DigiOne to drive a good outboard DAC via SPDIF.IMHO, BOSS is fine for a compact secondary setup, but for a main system, Pi + DigiOne SPDIF and a good outboard DAC can sound noticeably better.
