The engineer has no way of knowing whether the listener's playback system will preserve or invert polarity. The engineer can't possibly make a right or wrong decision. The only right or wrong is the acoustic polarity of the sound emitted by the listener's loudspeakers or headphones. It's up to the listener and only the listener to make it right.
