My long-time player, a JVC 1050 stopped working last week. It will no longer power up. I need to check under the hood, but if it's not dead, it's only a matter of time. I've had it for about fourteen years now.
I got my Audio Alchemy DDE 3.0 (DAC), power station #2 (Power supply-the big one) and DTI (jitter reduction unit) out of mothballs and hooked it up to the digital out a Toshiba DVD player.
The bass is certainly better than the JVC. I'm hearing lots more details with the AA DAC that the JVC hides. The soundstage? Much deeper and wider, with clearer imaging. There's only one thing missing...
The music. The JVC involved me in the music in a way the Alchemy can't, even though the Alchemy is better at all the "Audiophile" things.
I've tried to do my homework in anticipation of this day, but I'm in the same boat you are. I'm considering the Rega Apollo, or maybe something from Cambridge. I heard the Jolida CD player at a guy's house last week, and that sounded nice.
But really, reviews often don't tell you the entire story. I don't want to spend $1k or more just to be wowed by audiophile fireworks, and wondering where my music went.
Good luck to both of us!
Follow Ups:
........you should see if you could borrow that guy's Jolida, and try it in your rig for a few days. You might like it. I was also looking for something that offers more "music", and not so much "Hey, I just heard the drummer fart!". I've recently tried a Cambridge DacMagic, and a Valab NOS dac (with my Onix xcd-88 as a transport), and although both were quite different, neither one was what I was looking for. The Dacmagic was OK, but something in the midrange sounded too artificial, or too "electronic", to me. The Valab was smooth and very forgiving, but the music had no soul or life. Niether had a large or deep soundstage.
In comparison, the Jolida spits out lots of music, and fills the room, nicely. The music is big, and involving, with a nice tonal balance from top to bottom. Not top tilted, or "in your face" midrange, like many players. And so far, it's more consistent across different CD's, then anything I've tried. It also passes the "another room" test, where I can leave the listening position and walk around the house, and it still sounds like music, and not a jumbled mess of reproduced sounds. Keep in mind, though, the Jolida responds well to a good power cord and the right interconnects. And, the tube rolling thing is icing on the cake, for tailoring the sound.
I like it, but YMMV.
I don't know the guy well enough to ask him to borrow his CD player (yet). He brought it to an audio "party" Ed Shilling (Horn Shoppe) was throwing.
I did talk to him briefly about it. He said it got "great" when he put some 5751's in. We also talked about the Denon 103R moving coil cartridge, and CineMag step-up transformers. I may offer to let him borrow my CineMags if he'll let me try out the Jolida.
I'll put the Jolida on my short list. There's one for sale which has been modded by the Parts Connexion. That's rather tempting.
Thanks again.
There are many folks who are against heavily modding the Jolida, since you lose the basic sonic signature it's known for. The level 1 mods are cool, because they just improve on the original sound, but the higher level mods make the player sound like something else. Most will tell you that a good PC, some vibration isolation and tubes of your choice is all you need. Beyond that, you might as well just get a different player.
I've got a couple different pairs of 3 mica 5751's (RCA & GE), I've briefly tried, but so far I'm liking some early, new production Sovtek 12ax7LPS's, which are much more dynamic and punchy, although I still have to spend more time tube rolling, but I'm still on the fence about my choice of interconnects, as well. Still tweaking, but getting closer :-)
........if you're talking about that level 1 modded unit, newly listed at A'gon, that's a great price, and I'm sure it'll go fast. That's one you'll probably get most, if not all your money back, if you didn't like it and resold it.
