what do you mean "outperforms?"
and I assume you used the DAC with the old Toshiba?
Follow Ups:
By outperform I mean it sounds better. Sound stage was about the same, but detail was improved and bass response was much better.
Fot the DAC I A/B'd the Sony SACD output with the Rotel digital out into the DAC using the same CD, Beck, in both redbook and SACD format. The DAC sound was more analog with all else being about the same. I did not expect that result!
asking because I am a bit tired of my current digital players, admittedly haven't ever had a DAC but a friend does have one of the kits from HK.
I have a cheapo very cheapo Cyberhome DVD-300 player and used straight, it works very well for digital player in office. And old early 90's Sony 5 disc changer (no digital output).
Just wondering how to upgrade.
My main system has unmodded Pioneer DV-47Ai universal which sounds fairly good. Maybe DAC would be great, since the Pioneer has been well known to be a good transport.
Upgrade is easy. Purchase the dac of your choice (I really recommend the dac I mentioned) then run from the digital optical or coax out of ur player into the dac.
