Morning gents,
I understand that there were several companies (Denon, Philips, Luxman, Magnavox) that made CD players using 18 bit, 4x oversampling DACs from about '88 - '92. I haven't been able to find out which models though. The Denon website doesn't help, and I doubt that the others will either. Does anyone happen to know any of the model numbers, or where I might locate them (short of phone calls to the companies)?
Thanks,
Larry
Follow Ups:
i remember the denon dcd 1500.
to me it sounded really flat,
at the time i bought a proton,
cheaper and way better.
if you look for something old and
good: marantz cd94. that worked,
with the right technology.
It beats easely squeezebox and all
upsampling stuff.
Ciao.
I got an Arcam cd 70 for less that £60 on ebay.
Version with twin dacs, early version i.e not the
version n3. Working all right, sounds excellent.
I hate the new ARCAM stuff.
is one such player. Mine is still going. I also have a Pioneer 7xxx series with the same bit and oversampling, Burr Brown chips, can't remember the number, digital out. It is just sitting around but still works. Sounds quite good. I think the Rotel 855 also is such a player, and there are plenty of these around.

That was a nice sounding player in its day. A friend of mine still has one and kept using it even without the display. It's still not bad.
He bought a DAC that trumps it however.

I have one of those too, but IIRC, it's based on Panasonic's MASH and doesn't do oversampling. Display is unfortunately lit by little incandescent lamps which do eventually fail (though I found adequate substitutes). FWIW, treat the outputs with some care-power down before connecting/disconnecting cables and don't static-zap them, because it's all direct-coupled circuitry.
A rare thing indeed.
He went looking for a new one and couldn't find one where the display still worked online. I think it's on a shelf in a closet now.

If I can pick up one of these units for next to nothing, what have I got to loose? There are more than a few folks out there who think that they stand up rather well to many high $ current models.
Those early DACs sound like crap compared to even entry level ones today. Whay do you seek one?

Best Regards,

I have a couple Magnavox CDC-745 changers, and the sound is disgustingly good, by any standard. I'll put the one modified by Don Allen (tube output stage) against just about anything out there.
From a purely technical standpoint, although the interpolation of 18-bit 4x oversampling DAC is somewhat crude (requires heavier post-filtering), I'd still take that over the 24/96 upsampling units marketed today.
This 24/96 for CD which are 16/44 is nonsense.
