Hi, I just read John Atkinsons review on the MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 888..It seemed to me he loved it One thing gets me though. Why do reviewer's never go into detail on the drivers if they are made in China? I know the price is good for i888's but wouldn't it be a better selling point for Andrew Jones if he could brag a little about his drivers he uses. My Dyna A-25's drivers are going on 55 years and use Scandinavian drivers you can find volumes of info on.How about an article in Stereophile about the whereabouts, quality and duration of Chinese drivers. If MoFi could tout their drivers quality maybe they could sell their speakers in numbers like the A-25. It was a great review though....take care...Mark Korda
Follow Ups:
Erin of Erin's Audio Corner also really liked them, and he has an extensive suite of detailed measurements.
When the first sourcepoint launched Andrew Jones did tons and tons of interviews about the design and talked about his drivers. He has them made to his specification in China and has a trusted agent on the ground to make sure they are made as he wants them.
Hi Duke, a few years ago I bought a Chinese manual can opener. It could've open a can of B and M baked beans made here in Portland Me. The gear metal was soft and could not cut it. A couple years ago I took a risk and spent 35 bucks on a Chinese bare bones preamp the FX 01. It's blown any previous passive preamp I could come up with, built like a tank, Bournes volume control, gold jacks for 35 bucks. I hate to be an audio bigot and admit it kicks ass ! I never read the article on the 888 speaker info that Andrew Jones talked about. Thanks for opening my eyes and ears...-.take care...-Mark Korda
Is Andrew Jones that good a designer. He has some dull speakers around. Once in an interview he stressed the quality of drivers for good speakers. Chinese?
Bill
Please name the 'dull' Andrew Jones speakers. I read a ton of reviews including foreign ones and have never read anything but raves for his speakers, at least beginning with the TAD 1.
Hi Bill,,always like to read your ideas,take care...-.Mark K.
John is probably different. He probably knows a lot about how things are made. So this comment doesn't apply to his review.
But most reviewers don't understand, even functionally, how things work. When they do write about design they usually parrot the manufacturer without insight on whether the design really works that way or not. My two pet peeves are when reviewers call a planar driver a ribbon driver; they're not the same thing. And, of course, if the box isn't ported it's acoustic suspension which it may or may not be; all closed boxes are not acoustic suspension.
Even good manufacturers can get it wrong. I know a ported speaker that is designed to also plug the port and the designer calls it a coustic suspension. It can't be. A driver that works in a reflex box is too stiffly suspended to work as acoustic suspension.
you can source your own drivers & XO parts and build it yourself.
;)
all the best,
mrh

It's not as easy as U think. In the case of the MoFi 888, the drivers are proprietary and not just their name stamped on it.The real problem is the one I stated. Most reviewers don't know enough about design to write well about it. This doesn't mean they may not be good reviewers describing performance. Personally, except for a few reviewers like John Atkinson and Roy Gregory and Martin Coloms I'd prefer they didn't waste space trying to explain design.

Hi Hahax and MHardy, about 10,15,or 20 years ago Stereophile came out with an issue that had a DVD attached that had a tour of the Dynaudio factory and what they were doing ect.If I'm wrong it was Absolute Sound. Why not do this again with the raw drivers used in the Chinese loudspeaker manufacturers. I bet Julie Mullen wouldn't mind that assignment! One driver I wouldn't mind seeing some quality stats on is the Unidriver used in the KEF mini monitor which is amplified now,the model with the slightly curved front baffle. The frequency graph in Stereophile although was not as deep as the MoFi 888 was pretty much a strait line out to 20 k hertz like the 888. Wouldn't driver info,if positive, drive the sales of these models way up?When you buy a car don't you pop the hood? ...-Take care...-Mark K.
although I have no idea from whence.
all the best,

It was The Absolute Sound.

Thanks John, When I'm not seeing a detailed explanation on a loudspeakers drivers, quality ect.,that to me is like a Road and Track sports car review not mentioning or omitting the engine...-.great review though...-thanks...-Mark Korda
