Hi,just got my new Stereophile.Without even reading the review yet the picture of the Audio Note speaker on review looks exactly like the Orangutan 96. The Orangutan 96 costs 15,900 and the Audio Note 65.000 bucks. The Orangutan uses primo drivers,Seas, and both use exotic woods. When you look at both where is the 50 thousand bucks spent? I'll read it tonight. Take care and thanks for not having a lapse in my subscription as I got my check in the mail a few days ago. That's big in my book,thanks,....Mark Korda

Do you know which specific model was tested by Stereophile? If it is the field coil driver model, it is nothing like the DeVore Orangutan speakers in design and in sound. The field coil Audio Note that I heard was very vivid and lively sounding while retaining the smooth, warm sound that characterizes Audio Note speakers. It is a pretty good feat of engineering to make field coil drivers that can be used in sealed box speakers; other field coil speakers that I've seen get too hot for use in a small sealed box like that of the AN-E speaker.
While I like all models of the Audio Note AN-E line that I've heard, and I like the Orangutans that I've heard, the similarity is largely cosmetic. The Audio Notes are meant to be placed near the corner of the room, the Orangutans are better off of the back and side walls. The away from the wall placement of the Orangutans make for better imaging, but, in most other aspects, I prefer the Audio Note sound. There is something natural and "organic" about the sound when used with the right tube electronics (no, it does not have to be Audio Note amplification).
The entry level AN-E speaker is reasonably priced for its performance, in my opinion. As one goes up the line with improved parts, the sound does improve, but the price of improvement can be quite steep. I heard, and really liked the SEC model, but, the price is VERY steep. Still, if I had that kind of cash, and wanted a reasonably compact speaker that sits near the corner of the room, I cannot think of much else I would prefer.
One day after you lapsed. Nothing personal, just the publication business.
like the Sogon (great name for your wallet's contents) are laced with lots of silver litz wiring in the crossovers. All put in a little box.
I was expecting your comment on the Audionote speaker. But while this kind of thing ultimately doesn't matter to me you missed the line that best fits your attitude, the top of the AN-E speaker line with no copper, only siver used in the same box(and some other changes I suspect) that costs just under $400,000 making the Stereophile test version a bargain.
