Wow! AN's ears must have been burning 'cause I have recently been playing around with a Scott LK48 from the mid 60's and really liking it. The tone and wonderful fullness of the el84 makes me stop thinking of audiophile junk and relax. I am anxious to hear the L1 and catch even more of that magic! With better components (especially caps) and iron, the L1 has a real opportunity to take the place of those classic designs with greater reliability and more extension on both ends.
Good job bringing another neat product to the group, Brian and Andy. Makes me think that maybe there's room in my office system next to my kit1...
Coincidently I was also meesing up with Scott LK48 and came to the same conclusion- perfect 'kitchen radio" sound and it's a compliment actually;)
Old kit4 with lovely 6V6 valves has the same sound signature, perfect "family amp". Too bad that it always been overshadowed by SET/SEP amps and is no more available.
Regards,
But why not a SE version also?
el84 in SE triode would give less tyhasn 2 wpc. mine has only 1.8 wpc. i doubt if there's a market for such an amp. hehehe

The OTO SE and P1-SE are two of the most distinctive-sounding products made by AN(UK).Take a look at the original amp side of the OTO schematic (up above). I am not sure if AN has updated the circuit, or not. The original uses some global feedback...but oh the sound: clean, open, and punchy. I can't see the Kit schematic very well, but except for the SE connection, they don't look that different
I would have bought a P1-SE kit in a flash. The P1-SE costs about $5K in Denmark! This would be around $2K with taxes and shipping!

An interesting question! We came out with Andy Grove's EL34 CLASS AB1 amplifier and the results were staggering - We then proceeded to the CLASS AB1 EL84 amplifier which we have just announced and we are equally as excited with the sound -
Definately there is a place for well designed heavy class A push pull with high quality beefy transformers AND single ended in the world of high end audio - Advantages and disadvantages to both styles -
The following was an email I received from a customer hearing the EL34 L4 amplifier at the CES show - we had the L4 AMP C core version in a speaker mfg room -
"A friend of mine and I heard this amplifier ( L4 -EL34) at CES in the Focus loudspeaker room. I'm a single ended 2A3 guy myself. Well...the Focus people played this Flamenco dance track on their 90 db speakers ( Hi Fi Flamenco was the disc). You talk about kick'in @$$!!!When the track was over the room was full of people and everybody exhaled all at the same time! I'm now taking a second serious look at push-pull."
So the debate rages on - I am expecting that once a few people get to hear the new L1 and the word spreads we will start to post the reviews on the website - I expect the product to exceedingly popular!
The design sounds promising and one I'd love to try. I've had a nagging feeling for awhile that a good EL84 amp would be a nice match for my speakers. Currently using a L3 pre and an Audio Note P2 SE amp with Tonian Labs TL-D1 speakers.
17W is a ton of power for 95dB-sensitive speakers. You could play those speakers pretty loud in the LA Coliseum with 17W!
I was looking at Tonian labs. For some reason I thought they were in Greece (lower shipping costs to DK).
"What did the Romans ever do for us?"
Tonian Labs is based in Burbank, CA although it appears they have a dealer in Greece. I've read about them being shown at an audio show there.
The TL-D1 are great speakers and worked out better for me than a pair of Audio Note AN/J speakers for my small room. I haven't compared them in a larger space. They are both very fine speakers.
Contact me via e-mail for more info as this is getting OT for the Audio Note Kits Forum.
Yes its been priced to make it affordable and a great platform for rolling mullard tubes or copper film caps! - we are in a position where we want to encourage many new people to build there first kit and experience audiophile sound! Ok thanks for your comments!
Brian
This new L-1 series looks great! I can't wait to get my hands on one and have a listen.
