has anyone replaced the filament regs with schots in the m3 power supplies for filaments if so did you do straight replacement ? i think there is a small increase in voltage out with schotts ?
Follow Ups:
i see you have two main transformers. why is that ?
i've got an copper coupling caps at the moment but have ordered some scr teflons to try. has anyone else tried them ?
only one mains tx per m3 i used plural (confusingly !) referring to m3 supplies in dac, m3 and m3 phono
sorry, my fault
i was refering to exorcists photo of his L3 line stage and posted it in the wrong place
no problem - out of interest though did you end up installing schottky's in your mono filament supplies and if so what were the results ?
yes i did install schottkys in my mono filaments and posted a photo here
http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/audionotekits/messages/4850.html
the results were the same as adding them to the L3, a layer of hash was removed from the sound that i hadn't realised was there. can't remember wether they made more difference in the monos or the L3. the difference was subtle rather than night and day
i am taking things a step further and have ordered a pair of tentlabs filament supplies from diyhifisupply. these have schottkys as well but have a different type of regulation. am awaiting them in the post.....
same as the Factory AN M3 to M8
one for HT and the other for 5687 filaments
I think you mean bridge rectifier, and not filament regs, correct?
I replaced the rectifier bridge with the packaged Schottky diode bridge available from Parts Connexion. The package is pricey at ~50.00 but drops into place easily. If you decide to use the package, be sure to pay close attention to the pin out as it differs from the original bridge - ie. you will have to cut a couple of traces and jumper the pins.
you replace the bridge rectifier (KBU6J) with schottkys which comes before the regulator (LM7812 i think)
the schottkys do have a lower voltage drop across them which give you a higher voltage output to the regulator
the regulator puts out the same voltage regardles of input (within limits) so the voltage going out to your filaments is unchanged
thx have you installed in the mono supplies as well ?
yes, i replaced the rectifier by 4 X 31DQ06, it works perfectly
thx i also have 31DQ06 did you notice improved sound ?
the highs got extended and more silky,
my kit combination is AN silver foil coupling caps + TRANS-03AN
Hello did you try also the copper coupling caps or only the silvers in the M3?
And if yes what is the difference in sound between the copper and silver?
i was thinking also about the silver caps.
i started with M-caps gold/silver/oil, and then upgraded to AN silver foil
M-caps sounded a bit "solid-state" and i didn't like it
no wonder, kit with AN silver foil sounds a bit close to the factory M8
with the latest mods, i changed all the internal PS cables to Jensen silver wirings (not on this pic)
reposted in the right place i hope !
i see you have two main transformers. why is that ? how are you using them ?
i've got an copper coupling caps at the moment but have ordered some scr teflons to try. has anyone else tried them ?
my approach was to shorten the cabling as much as possible by positioning the boards and using an extender kit from hifi collective in the uk
Seems like this pre is made to use as much expensive silver wire as it possibly can . What a waste !!! Just to have those golden knobs spreaded on the faceplate;(
