Hello,I've been really enjoying the combination of a Schiit Freya S preamplifier and Schiit Loki Mini tone control and was thinking "what if they were available as a single unit?"
Here's my crude mock-up of what it might look like:
It could be called the "Freya L". Given that the Freya S sold for $599 and the Loki Mini at $149, Schiit could probably manufacture and list a Freya L at $699 USD. There's nothing else like it currently available, especially at such a reasonable price.
With so many of us aging audiophiles experiencing hearing loss but still wanting to listen to our carefully crafted stereo system, something like the "Freya L" would provide a decent, very affordable preamp with built-in analog equalization. Despite the crudeness of my mock-up, I think it would look really cool.

cut a big 'ol hole, solder a few connections and you can have that! :-) Or just glue it to the top and get some super short IC's. I've noticed a small tick/pop lately when powering my Loki on/off.
I actually did think about cutting a hole in the Freya face plate and using some nice machine screws to attach the Loki face plate to the Freya. I could probably figure out a way to attach the Loki circuit board to the Freya's but I'm not sure I'm up to the task of soldering the connections. I've had mixed results in the past.
Has anything else changed in your system that might be the cause of the feedback?
I just got a new power strip to plug it into which is how I turn it on and off, and it's still doing it. Two different pops when turning on and off. I'll have to power my amp on last/off first to avoid it.
I always power up the amp last so if there's a small spike turning on any of the components I wouldn't hear it. I'll have to check tomorrow.

You are supposed to power your amp on last on shut it first. I've been told that many times by a few great techs.
I was thinking of a preamplifier with subwoofer controls built-in because I have this feelin that the sub can be advantageously tailored for difference types of music. No?
I built just the crossover preamp with a bit of gain that you are talking about but it is a separate preamp/crossover to my line stage. Just use short IC's and your golden.

I use the Loki Mini to reduce the bass output to my stand-mount speakers so they don't contribute to bass nodes using stereo subwoofers. I also use the Loki to compensate for age-related hearing loss. I can bump up the 2000 Hz and 8000 Hz bands to help fill in the voids in my hearing range. It's not perfect and eventually I'll end up with hearing aids, but for now this works well.
I have powered subs (using RCA connections) with remote volume control to add or reduce output for certain music sources but the frequency roll off is set manually. I suppose you could just run the subs full range and use the Loki to adjust the bass roll off to the subs. But the Loki is not controlled remotely so it wouldn't be convenient to do that for specific music sources.

I decided to own up to "it" this past year when I began questioning the need for a good stereo in a semi-dedicated room if I couldn't even hear the full frequency range and struggled to understand certain singers at reasonable volume levels. So I made some adjustments in speaker placement, seating arrangements, acoustic treatments, and yes, started using (gasp) a tone control equalizer. I'm having fun and enjoying the stereo more now than in years. :-)

a tilt control ala the early 60s Quad pre amp
Hi, Ozzie,I think I prefer the tone controls of the Loki Mini over those of the Quad based on the frequency response curves shown below.
The Quad Tilt function, while perhaps better than the classic Bass/Treble adjustments of old, lacks the control of mid-range frequencies like the equalizer functions of the Loki.
The Quad Bass Lift and Step controls are designed to compensate for small speaker bass response (without subwoofers) rather than integrated as a true equalizer control. That would explain why the Loki has a smoother, more consistent response curve for the attenuation and boost of bass frequencies. I could see the need for steeper response curves in the Loki if there were five or six bands.

with a balance control, and slightly larger package I probably would at least seriously consider it (it's got no depth!). Also, make the tone controls active at the extremes and not as wide band and maybe one middle instead of the 2.

Not sure I understand what "active" tone controls are. I'd hate to lose the mid-range frequency controls. In fact, it would be great if Schiit came up with a five (or six?) band tone control to allow more control between the 400 Hz and 8000 Hz bands.

Not so much tone controls. Since almost all my listening is to a computer source I prefer to used a digital EQ.In general I've been critical of the Freya' control, a.k.a. "user interface". See my comments in that regard at the link below ...

Hi, Feanor,Balance control seems to be a function that's being asked for more often these days. I can see the desire to attempt the "straight wire" approach to design but if a preamp is going to include tone controls, why not add a balance control, right? But I've been reading up on the methods of incorporating balance control to a preamp and it's not as simple as I first thought.
I can see the need to attenuate each channel independently as a way to balance channels if you have problems with component output or room acoustics. I'm not an advocate for fixing poorly mixed sound tracks, though. It is what it is.
