owns Infinity and some of the older models had impedances which dropped to .8 ohms. Used to blow up amps left and right if the right note was played.... As a result HK and thier conglomeration always designs their amplifiers to be high current to survive those occasional low impedance dips. Their receivers are very stable under difficult loads and they used to be the only mass marketer who actually rated their amplifier sections by the amount of current they could dump (IIRC, their older 50 watters could dump 40 amps, making them sound more powerful than many 100 watters)
YMMV obviously

I'm not really looking for an older HK but a modern AVR. Their specs don't look that remarkable, but like everyone else today. I wonder if their AVR's amp section is better than others.
Power rating are generally lower than most, but check out theor amperage ratings: that's waht makes them more capable of handling lower imoedance loads.
As far as Dolby Digital and DTS, well everyone uses the same circuitry. They have to in order to receoive certification.
As far as AVR receivers in general just make sure it has enough inuts for your needs: primarily HDMI ones. Prologic options mean nothing these days unless you have a lot of tapes

She is still using it today. Paired it with Infinity RSe speakers and a Dual turntable (she wanted auto return/shutoff). Ah, the old days . . . Pacific Stereo.
