I built a 3 shelf rack using 1.5" MDF and it's a *very* sturdy and heavy. I use small pieces of maple under some of the equip now but maple would have been too expensive for the whole thing, ~48" x 23". I had the 5/8" all thread machined to a point for coupling to my wood floor. Works great. That's about 130 pounds of iron and glass on the top shelf!
