Yeah - I think I'll leave the output stage alone in terms of design (apart from getting rid of the 1uf lytic on the output an putting a film in).I was happy with it before it went wrong, so if I can get it back to how it was that'll be fine. It would be a different matter if it was my CD.
The regs both get extremely hot, and both had dry joints. However, they are not in series and have completely different loads. The 6v reg runs the CPU and PLL chips, the 12v reg runs everything else (apart from the display). It's difficult to see how failure of anything post regulation could have this effect on both regulators. I really am beginning to think it's the result of a) inadequate heatsinks, b) no ventilation, c) the power amp being right overhead and raising the outside temp. The heat could have been really high inside the box and after 12 years I guess cap failure is almost a certainty.
Anyway, we'll see what happens.
